GRADUATE SPOTLIGHT: David Perez of Arizona College Prep High School loves all things basketball. His dad made the family a half court basketball gym in the barn so they could practice daily. He is the best helper on the chicken egg farm. He is a compassionate soul who loves well. He has the best smile and brings fun and craziness to his house. David currently works at Tractor Supply and with League Me basketball trainer Desmond Howard. Desmond is a huge reason has so much success with basketball. Desmond Howard is a family friend and mentor who's David with his whole heart and has given David one of kind opportunities to train with the top high school and college basketball players. GRADUATE SPOTLIGHT: Griffin Wirth of Arizona College Prep High School played varsity ACP golf and participated in DECA. Griffin joined yearbook his senior year in which he used photography skills. Whether in the classroom or on the course, he strived to show up as a leader. He was selected to join the State Leadership Athletic Council for his junior and senior year. He loves hiking, exploring, fishing, and playing pickle ball. Griffin became a Knight in 7th grade at Arizona College Prep - Middle School. GRADUATE SPOTLIGHT: Luz Portilla-Villota of Arizona College Prep High School loves school, is an avid reader and dedicated learner. In sports, she has been a synchronized swimmer competing most of her life at local, state, and national level and dedicated diver at ACP. Luz enjoys reading, baking, and traveling. She is interested in psychology, neuroscience, and philosophy. A dedicated member of her school speech and debate team. In essence, Luz is a beautiful person inside and out. She is a bright girl who loves learning, having fun, being a great friend, spending time with family and helping others. Something to remark, for what she is very passionate about it, she currently is the athlete representative for diversity equity and inclusion for USA artistic swimming. GRADUATE SPOTLIGHT: Suryatej "Sunny" Chavali of Arizona College Prep High School has taken charge as a leader who wants to make a difference in his community. Sunny earned several accolades in high school, including being named a National Merit Scholarship Finalist and Deloitte Team Tech Challenge Winner. He demonstrated his curiosity and critical thinking through participating in internships like the SCENE Internship and the GCU Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning Summer Internship. He had a research paper published on the effects of parents' expectations on a teenager's career. Sunny also completed multiple medical shadowing studies. GRADUATE SPOTLIGHT: Katie Park of Arizona College Prep High School has been a Knight since her sophomore year. She has loved the ACP community and has participated in orchestra (along with being in the Phoenix Youth Symphony Orchestra), speech and debate, and student government in her junior and senior year. She is also a Unicef, Science is Fun, Best Buddies, and NHS member. She has received the Chandler Education Foundation's Impact Scholarship for completing 100+ hours of volunteer work and is planning to use that fund to attend Baylor University's School of Honor. She has worked very hard over the years and plans to make many memories in college. She is thankful for her experience at ACP and can't wait for what the future brings for her. GRADUATE SPOTLIGHT: Marco Palafox of Arizona College Prep High School is a student athlete who has played with the ACP varsity football team since freshman year. Marco is a captain and Offensive Lineman of the Year for two consecutive seasons. Marco also competed in ACP's track and field team for discus, shot put, and javelin. He is known as a Mr. ACP competitor where he showed his best pick up lines, dancing and singing skills. Marco was the voice of ACP and the announcer for the softball team. Outside of school, Marco plays online games with his friends, takes a dip in the pool, and reads books. Marco always has the biggest smile, but mostly others recognize him by that contagious laugh. Marco is passionate about fitness and athletes and would like to pursue this in college. He will be attending Universidad de las Américas Puebla in Cholula, México to play football. GRADUATE SPOTLIGHT: Joseph Fortunato of Arizona College Prep High School is a talented and artistic photographer with a newfound love of theater and performing. He has a strong, witty personality and a great sense of humor coupled with remarkable empathy. His interests include physical fitness, film, travel, and a diverse taste in music. GRADUATE SPOTLIGHT: Camila Lopez from Arizona College Prep High School is a compassionate, kind, and loyal friend. She has a passion for service. One of her favorite clubs at school is Best Buddies. Camila has played the clarinet for seven years and was in the marching band. She loves to embroider, do calligraphy, and read. Camila will graduate magna cum laude and will attend Chandler-Gilbert Community College in the fall. She plans to pursue a degree in special education and serve a mission for her church. GRADUATE SPOTLIGHT: Abby Tawney from Arizona College Prep High School is a student athlete and three-sport letterman for basketball, softball and cross country. She is a lifeguard who loves to spend time with her family and friends. Abby is hard working and grateful for the amazing teachers and coaches she has had in high school. GRADUATE SPOTLIGHT: Xavier Gacusan from Arizona College Prep High School loves sports, planes, flying, and rockets. He played football all 4 years of high school, played baseball since he was 8, and recently learned golf. He is also currently training for a marathon. He can usually be found flying on his flight simulator or playing video games with his brothers. He has not missed a single day since starting ACP in 7th grade. His hardworking mentality will send him to the stars and beyond! He will attend ASU's Barrett, The Honors College to study Aerospace Engineering with an emphasis on Astronautics and will be joining the Airforce ROTC along with getting his pilot's license. GRADUATE SPOTLIGHT: Alexis Coffey splits her time between Arizona College Prep High School and East Valley Institute of Technology where she is enrolled in the Radio/Audio Production Program. You can hear her on the local radio station, 88.7 the Pulse. She loves to play guitar and bass and enjoys crocheting, knitting and baking. She has been a member of the same Girl Scout Troop since kindergarten and has completed over 100 hours of community service in high school. Alexis was awarded a scholarship and all expenses paid trip to Washington, D.C., by the organization Constituting America for her essay about the First Amendment. GRADUATE SPOTLIGHT: Brandon Bowman from Arizona College Prep High School played football all four years. He loves history, military, fairness, and accountability. Brandon had the most positive experience growing up through CUSD. All of his teachers helped shape his future. There are a couple of extremely influential staff he would like to recognize and thank for their support: Luke Hickey for being a great leader and role model at CTA-Humphrey; Erica Castorena, the first teacher ever to genuinely connect with him; Andrea Hays for taking the time to really get to know Brandon and lead us to ACP; Esteban Ruiz for being a coach, mentor, and friend; and Myron Blueford for his unwavering support and dedication. Brandon is entering the Corps of Cadets at Norwich University! He was awarded the National ROTC scholarship and will study criminal justice while playing for their football team. GRADUATE SPOTLIGHT: Travis Graney from Arizona College Prep High School loves his family. Throughout his high school career, he maintained a wonderful GPA while prioritizing quality time with his family. He is the best brother to his little sisters and loves riding dirt bikes in the desert with his dad and brothers. Travis is one of the kindest people you will ever meet. GRADUATE SPOTLIGHT: Katelyn Sims from Arizona College Prep High School has worked very hard this year as president of the GSA Club at ACPHS to be as friendly and accepting as possible and hopes that her efforts are making the world just a little bit nicer. She loves art, cosplaying, and helping others. She is compassionate and caring and loves sharing random shark facts. GRADUATE SPOTLIGHT: Quentin Boggs from Arizona College Prep High School is an active runner with a heart of gold who competed on ACP's cross country and track team for all four years. He attended CTA Independence before joining ACP. He has been accepted to Northern Arizona University but is planning on staying local and completing a couple years at CGCC to support ACP High's Track and Field as a coach before moving north to study computer science. SENIOR SPOTLIGHT: Zoö Soderquist is an AP Scholar with Distinction who attended ACP schools since 6th grade. Zoö has been in Speech & Debate for four years and Lincoln Douglas (LD) Debate Captain for three years. She is the State LD Debate Champion, and she qualified three times to the National Speech & Debate Association (NSDA) National Tournament. She earned the elusive NSDA degree of Premier Distinction (1,500 points, representing over 250+ debate rounds) and the Academic All-American Scholar (top 1% of students). She is the #1 ranked LD debater in AZ, and #32 in the country! Zoö maintains a 4.4 GPA while working part-time and tutoring kids in public speaking. SENIOR SPOTLIGHT: Dominic Sobieski was a student at ACP since 7th grade. Known for pushing boundaries, he was also known for being quick to lend an ear and a hand. He is genuinely interested in people and leaves ACP well-known and well-liked. With a bold fashion sense and an eye for street style, it was no surprise Dominic finished his senior year as Best Dressed. One of the earlier members of the DECA program at ACP, we expect to see his marketing aptitude and fashion savvy birth a clothing line in the near future. SENIOR SPOTLIGHT: Waldo Benjamin King was involved in Speech and Debate, where he participated in many competitions and captained three different events. His efforts led to a letter, pins, and distinction as an Academic All-American. He also founded the school's Philosophy Club. He is a member of National Honor Society and a National Merit Scholar Finalist. He maintained a 4.75 weighted GPA and graduated summa cum laude. SENIOR SPOTLIGHT: Rania Shaltot was an ACP Knight since 7th grade. In addition to ACP, Rania has attended EVIT (East Valley Institute of Technology) as part of the veterinary assistance program for the past two years and graduated as an approved veterinary assistant. Rania is a very kind and caring friend, always checking in with her friends. She is graduating to attend University of Arizona and pursue her passion for taking care of animals as a veterinarian. SENIOR SPOTLIGHT: Arun Barath Vijay Sankar was part of National Honor Society, Key Club, Best Buddies (Treasurer) and Sports Medicine (President). He expressed his commitment and compassion to his community through various volunteer activities and accumulated over 1000 hours of volunteer work. He enjoyed volunteering as an athletic trainer student aide working alongside ACP's athletic training staff this past year and volunteering weekly with the Banner Desert Medical Center. Arun will be graduating summa cum laude as an AP Scholar with Distinction and a Chandler IMPACT Scholar at 16 years old. He will study physiology and the medical sciences with the W.A. Franke Honors College at the The University of Arizona, where he accepted the Wildcat Excellence and Dean's Exemplary awards, in hopes of attending Medical School in the future. SENIOR SPOTLIGHT: Mariela Galindo joined ACP in 7th grade and was involved in several clubs and activities since. She was a Link Crew and StuGo member, and her spirited personality helped her become co-mascot through her junior and high school years. She was the President of ACP's Environmental Club (first ever), the National Honor Society and the Senior Class. Mariela also represented ACP at the City of Chandler Mayor's Youth Commission Teen Town Hall, AASC (Arizona Association of Student Councils) State Convention, the Hermanas Conferences and the CUSD's Youth Equity Stewardship. Mariela will graduate magna cum laude with a Seal of Biliteracy in ASL (American Sign Language) and as a National Hispanic Scholar. SENIOR SPOTLIGHT: Hunter Bickes was involved in Student Government (student body president), Best Buddies, National Honor Society, and golf. He worked with administration to help prepare for the opening of the new Arizona College Prep campus, coordinating tours of the new facility and providing information about the school to interested families. As a four-year member of ACP's golf team, Hunter qualified to play in the state tournament each year, helping them earn the State Runner-Up trophy his third year. He served as team captain and mentored younger athletes. Hunter graduated summa cum laude and will attend University of Arizona to major in biochemistry while working to become an orthodontist. SENIOR SPOTLIGHT: Ibrahim Altiti is a well rounded individual. He earned his martial arts first degree Black Belt at 12 years old. Ibrahim has been a student at ACP since 7th grade. During his high school years, he joined many clubs like UNICEF, Key Club, Future Medical Professionals and National Honor Society. To be exposed to various majors and fields, Ibrahim participated at ASU National Summer Transportation Institute (NSTI). During NSTI he became OSHA and Flagpole certified. As Ibrahim graduates high school at age 17, he will have earned 35 hours of Dual Enrollment credits. Ibrahim is graduating magna cum laude with great distinction in academic achievement. SENIOR SPOTLIGHT: Blake Enwiller will be graduating summa cum laude with a 4.8 GPA. He is the Math Club president and the Speech & Debate team captain. This past year, he qualified to compete on the national level in both clubs. He is an Academic All-American, AP Scholar with Distinction, and National Merit Scholar. SENIOR SPOTLIGHT: Tarryn Jo Weigand actively mentored fellow students in the Connections Program and LINK. She held leadership roles in Student Government and National Honor Society. Her volunteer commitments and dedication to community outreach earned her the Chandler Education Foundation Impact Scholarship. Tarryn earned the Seal of Biliteracy in Spanish and will be graduating magna cum laude with a 4.4 GPA. Tarryn also successfully completed 40+ dual enrollment credits through Maricopa Community College and was selected to join the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society with her academic excellence, therefore qualifying her as an eligible recipient of the Phi Theta Kappa Scholarship. SENIOR SPOTLIGHT: Jake Spector is an Eagle Scout. He created and led the Game Club at ACP for four years. He is a member of the Quill & Scroll International Honor Society for high school journalists and is a two-time winner of the districtwide film festival. He was awarded the Arizona State Art Seal in media proficiency. Jake started his own 3D printing business, servicing customers in school and online. He also enjoys costume design in his spare time. SENIOR SPOTLIGHT: Nathaniel Huffman was on the wrestling team, National Honor Society, National Hispanic Honor Society, and ACP Athletic Leadership Council. As a wrestler, he qualified for the state tournament all four years, placing 6th his junior year and 4th his senior year. He earned All-State Academic recognition, the National Wrestling Coaches Association Academic All-American status all four years, and the College Board National Hispanic Recognition Award. SENIOR SPOTLIGHT: Gabby DeMoss has been an ACP Knight for six years. In that time, Gabby has been an active member of the International Club, Gay-Straight Alliance (GSA), and Art Attack club. Gabby has been President of the GSA since 2020 and Vice President of International Club since 2021. Gabby has since been named a National Hispanic Scholar and an AP Scholar and has received a full-tuition scholarship to attend the W.A. Franke Honors College at the University of Arizona. SENIOR SPOTLIGHT: Frederick Changho attended ACP since freshman year. He joined the speech & debate team and became a member of the team's leadership council. He won his senior year's State Championship in Public Forum Debate and qualified for the Congressional Debate summer 2022 at the National Speech and Debate Tournament. He was awarded with the NSDA Seal of Outstanding Distinction and recognized as an Academic All-American. He also earned the highest possible ACT score and graduated summa cum laude as an AP Scholar with Distinction. SENIOR SPOTLIGHT: Sophia Genevieve Vasquez has been a proud "Knight" since 7th grade. Her strong work ethic has enabled her to maintain a 4.2 GPA and earn AP Scholar with Honors. She received the Seal of Biliteracy in Spanish. She was manager for the varsity soccer her senior year, and she participated in several school clubs including UNICEF and Best Buddies. He also worked alongside the sports medicine team attending various athletic events and supporting the team with injuries, rehabs, treatments, and game coverage. SENIOR SPOTLIGHT: Keaton Messerole has been at ACP since 7th grade. He will graduate cum laude. He was a four-year starter on the football team and selected to be a captain his senior year. He received many football honors throughout his four years, including All-State, All-CUSD, AZ All-Academic Team, and Offensive Lineman of the Year multiple times. He also volunteered for four years with the football team and participated in DECA (formerly Distributive Education Clubs of America) for one year. Although Keaton received many offers to play football at the college level, he decided not to pursue football in college. SENIOR SPOTLIGHT: Robert Turner has been a student at ACP since 7th grade. He is a member of the National Honor Society, DECA (formerly Distributive Education Clubs of America), and Key Club. He played varsity football for four years, winning the Most Improved Player Award his junior year and making the state All-Academic football team twice. After graduating magna cum laude, he will attend the University of Alabama and plans on majoring in aerospace engineering. SENIOR HIGHLIGHT: Ryan Lancaster was an active member of the Speech and Debate team for four years, lettering for the last three seasons. He is also a member of the National Honor Society. Ryan is an IMPACT Chandler Scholar, with over 150 volunteer hours supporting several local organizations such as AZCEND and Saving One Life animal rescue; he also tutored multiple elementary and junior high students needing special assistance during the COVID-19 pandemic. He earned the New American University Scholarship at the President's Award level. SENIOR HIGHLIGHT: Nicholas David will graduate magna cum laude from ACP as well as from Chandler-Gilbert Community College with an associate of science degree. A member of National Honors Society at ACP and Phi Theta Kappa Honors Society at CGCC, he will attend Barrett, the Honors College at ASU with a double major in architecture and either civil or structural engineering. Nicholas was part of the first ACP team to participate in the Lemelson-MIT Innovations competition, one of 15 high school teams in the U.S. to make the semi-finalists with a great product idea. Nicholas and his partners are in the process of patenting their design. He is founder/president of Coding Club, founder/president of Design Club, co-founder/manager of Music Club, member of Mock Trial Club, UNICEF and more. He loves music and has played the piano since age 3. In band from since 5th grade, he also plays flute and drums. SENIOR HIGHLIGHT: Andrew Coffey will begin attending Barrett Honors College at Arizona State University in the 2021 fall semester. He will be a student in the W.P. Carey Business School at ASU. He aspires to have a successful and challenging career in business or finance. Andrew earned the New American University Scholarship from ASU. He is graduating magna cum laude after earning an academic letter in each of his four years of high school. SENIOR HIGHLIGHT: Grace Gardner was an active member of the JV Cheer team during her Freshman and Sophomore years, both times competing at Nationals. Grace was an active member of the International Thespian Society for three years, student-directing all major productions at ACP during that time. Grace competed at State in her junior year in Stage Direction and was selected to compete at Nationals for Stage Direction -- which was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Grace was awarded the Dean Scholarship at Northern Arizona University where she will major in Business Management. SENIOR HIGHLIGHT: Kellen Gibson was a varsity level four-sport athlete in hockey, football, wrestling, and track and field. He helped establish the ACP football program and served as captain for 4 years. Kellen was also a four-time wrestling sectional champion, four-time state qualifier, and the Division III State Champion (220 lbs weight class). He made the all-state academic team in hockey, football, and wrestling and was a state qualifier in the Discus. Kellen excelled in the classroom, maintaining a 4.0 unweighted GPA throughout high school. He was a three-year member of NHS, part of Knights Connection Program mentoring incoming freshmen, and will graduate as an AP Scholar. A Triple Impact Competitor Scholar Athlete, ACP Football Legacy Scholarship winner, and finalist for the AIA Scholar Athletic award, Kellen will be attending Johns Hopkins University to play football and major in biology with emphasis in pre-medicine. SENIOR HIGHLIGHT: Arizona College Prep Erie senior Alexandra Lee has been a proud "Knight" since 7th grade. She has held her academic letter award for all four years of high school and a student government letter for three. She was junior class president and currently holds the secretary position on the STUGO Executive Committee. Her club affiliations include NJHS then NHS, Key Club, Newspaper, Creative Writing and Literary Magazine. Alex is graduating with honors and has accepted the Lumberjack Scholarship to attend Northern Arizona University - NAU Honors College in the fall. SENIOR HIGHLIGHT: Michelle Sheikh was an active member of National Honors Society and Speech and Debate team, founder and president of Biophysics and Helping Hands clubs, played varsity Tennis, and was dedicated to research, completing two research internships with ASU's Biodesign C department and her own individual research project. Michelle presented to the Flinn Foundation and National Science Foundation, received Best of Fair at the Chandler Innovation Fair and AzSEF, Top 6 Junior Science and Humanities symposium finalist, nominated Future Innovator of the Year at the Governor's Celebration of Innovation, and won 1st place from both the U.S. Agency for International Development and the Air Force Research Laboratory as a Regeneron ISEF finalist. She will graduate magna cum laude as an AP Scholar, New American University Dean's Award and the New American University Provost Award recipient. SENIOR HIGHLIGHT: Astha Rohit has been a student at ACP since 9th grade and has accomplished many feats since then. She was the founder of the first photography-related club at ACP and has been president since her freshman year. She has also been the president of AP Scholars for three years and has achieved the AP Scholar with Distinction Award. She is also an active member of NHS, Key Club, Red Cross, Future Medical Professionals Club, KOS (theatre) and more. After three years of learning American Sign Language, Astha received her Seal of Biliteracy and is still studying ASL. For her final year at ACP, she joined the school newspaper and became a staff writer for the ACP Knight Times. She enjoyed participating in both her studies and extracurricular activities at ACP. SENIOR HIGHLIGHT: Ananya Lakhotia is a recipient of the highly competitive and prestigious Flinn Scholarship for 2021 and will be attending Barrett, The Honors College at ASU to double major in Biochemistry and Justice Studies. For the past 3 years she has been an active member of the Speech and Debate team where she contributed both as a participant and captain. She received the Academic All-American award from the National Speech & Debate Association, reserved for only the top 2% of the NSDA member students. As state champion she also got the opportunity to represent Arizona at Nationals. A founding leader of the Peace of Mind club, she was also involved with She's the First, Tutor club and National Honor Society. From an early age, Ananya learned various dance forms including the Indian classical dance of Kathak and in her spare time enjoys baking.
