Late/Absence Policies
Tests/Quizzes
Students who miss the day of the test/quiz only:
Because no new content was given on the day of the test, any student absent on the day of the test will be given the test on the day they return to school.Students who miss the days leading up to the test, but are present on test day:Students who miss new content days leading up to the test will be given one or more additional days upon their return to school to prepare for the test. Keep in mind this is exceptionally rare in AP Physics C: Mechanics due to almost all of the test content being covered in AP Physics 1.Students who miss days leading up to the test, but did not miss any new content, are expected to take the test on the day they return with the other students.Students who are taking a make-up test will do so in another teacher's room during the regular class period. The make up test follows the same constraints (time, allowed materials, etc) as was given to the other students. Make-up testers are not permitted at any time to have the test in their possession while unsupervised. Doing so will void the test. The most common example is students returning back to class, with the test in hand, after completing the test. Upon completion of the test, the completed test will remain with the proctoring teacher while the student returns to class.LabsAny student who misses one day of a multi-day lab is permitted to re-join their current lab group and use the group data/graphs. Any student missing more than one day of a lab, or missing the only data when data was collected, must perform the lab without using any data/graphs obtained by their current group. If multiple students from different lab groups or even class periods all join together to make-up the lab, they will be permitted to join together as a new group for the purpose of completing that lab as long as the group does not exceed 4 members. Students who are making-up the lab will most often be given an extended due date that is reasonable in relation to the circumstances.
Lab write-ups in AP Physics C are both short and frequent. Practicums are especially short, as write-ups can commonly run only 1 page in length, and are mostly the calculations required to complete the practicum. Thus, practicum write-ups will always be due the following class period upon completion of the practicum. Inquiry labs are a bit more substantial and will be due a few class periods after completion of the lab.Because labs are so frequent, labs can be submitted the class period following their due date at a 50% penalty. If a student is absent the day a lab is due, they are expected to turn in the lab the day they return.Otherwise, late labs are not accepted.
Homework
- Worksheets
The purpose of worksheet homework is to have them completed so that we can go over them in class the following day. For this reason, there is no late credit opportunity given for worksheet homework.Students who are absent the day the worksheet was handed out can not receive an extension because on the day they return to class they will be immediately given all of the answers and therefore never really did any homework of any kind. These students will be permitted to use their UT percentage score for the unit or their next worksheet homework grade as the grade for the missing assignment. This determination must be made on that day the students return and it is the student's responsibility to both make the teacher aware of the situation and remind the teacher on the day the follow-up assignment is due.Students who are absent the day the worksheet is due will submit their worksheet for credit upon their return to class.
- UT Assignment
The UT assignment is published through the University of Texas and is used by students throughout the United States and Internationally. Being that these are multi-week assignments that are intended to be done piece-wise over those multiple weeks, this should not pose a problem for any students other than those who wait until the last opportunity to complete the assignment.
There is no late work accepted for UT. It is the student's responsibility to progressively work through the UT and not wait until the last minute. Students who have technical problems, emergencies, or are late to submit their request to be enrolled in the class are NOT given an extension on the UT assignment.
