• SCHOOL COUNSELING REFERRAL PATHWAY
    CHANDLER UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT

    STEP 1: STUDENT IDENTIFIED

Parent/guardian or CUSD staff observes a concern with a student. A student may also observe a concern in a peer or may self-identify as needing some support.

STEP 2: REFERRAL TO SCHOOL COUNSELOR

A referral is made to the school counselor at the respective school.

    STEP 3: ASSESS NEEDS

The school counselor meets with the student to determine urgency of the referral and level of services needed.

    STEP 4: CONSENT

If there is a need for ongoing mental health supports, the school counselor will notify parents/guardians of concerns and receive consent prior to providing services.

    STEP 5: ACCESS TO SERVICES

Student receives school-based counseling services and/or a referral is sent to a partnering mental health agency.

Some CUSD sites also have School Social Workers and if this is the case then the referral for additional supports can be made to them too. Additionally, CUSD sites have full or part-time School Psychologists- they must be informed of a school counseling referral when the concern is related to a suspected or known disability.
