Just Right Books

  • Here are some pictures of the kids learning the Daily 5!

The Daily 5 is aimed to help students develop the daily habits of reading, writing, and working independently that will lead to a lifetime of literacy independence. Today we worked on "Just right books"

Today's lesson was really fun. I had all the kids take off one of their shoes and put them in a huge pile along with some shoes I brought from home.  I had the kids try on different shoes including mine.  We talked about how books are kind of like shoes.  If the shoe doesn't fit, we don't wear it.  If a book doesn't fit, it's not right for us--YET. We also discussed how it’s okay that some shoes fit some kids and not others.  We may be the same age, but don't have the same size foot.  Same with reading. We are all 5 or 6 years old, but we read different books at different levels.  It's okay if we can't read some books that are hard for us just yet, but we will be able to eventually. We are all at different levels and what matters most is that we are growing as readers and reading for meaning!  The kids really understand this and we had great conversations! Ask your child how picking a book is like picking a pair of shoes.
