    2014-2015 Sports Medicine I 
     
    This course is designed for students interested in learning prevention treatment, and rehabilitation of athletic injuries.  Topics include anatomy, physiology, first aid, CPR, physical condition, nutrition, therapeutic modalities and therapeutic exercise.  CPR for healthcare provider's certification will be obtained.  Students will have the opportunity to participate in HOSA (Health Occupations Students of America).

     

    COURSE DESCRIPTION

    Sports Medicine 1 is a full year, introduction course designed for students that may be interested in fields such as athletic training, physical therapy, medicine, personal training/fitness, nursing, exercise physiology, kinesiology, nutrition and any other related fields.

    This class includes course work in the following areas: Anatomy and Physiology, first aid, CPR and AED, injury prevention, terminology, common injuries, emergency care, taping techniques, nutrition,…

    In addition to course work there will be a hands-on approach utilized when learning anatomy, evaluating injuries, taping and wrapping, and strength and conditioning principles and CPR/AED/Emergency Procedures and First Aid

    MATERIALS NEEDED

    A composition book to take notes

    A 3 ring binder for Sports Medicine to organize handouts, notes, quizzes and tests

    A pen or pencil Everyday

    GRADING

    A= 90-100%, B= 80-89%, C=70-79%, D=60-69%, F= 50-59%                           

    Grades Include: Handouts/Notebook/Participation, Quizzes (20-25), Tests (Semester and Final), Presentations (3)          

    Parents can access student grades online through Infinite Campus.

    Parents and students can access my webpage from the BHS website under Faculty Tab and click on my name to access my site. I will have the syllabus and current topics on that site to look at.

     

     

    ASSIGNMENTS

    There will be 20-25 Quizzes, 1 after each topic

    There will be 2 Tests, a Midterm and a Final

    There will be 3 Presentations (Sports Medicine Careers, Training Room Design and Injuries)

    Late work will be accepted at 50% of the value within 1 week of due date

    CLASSROOM RULES

    Always treat everyone with RESPECT

    There will be NO Profanity

    No talking when someone else is talking

    No cell phones, IPODS, Tablets or computers. Keep them turned off

    Be professional and mature

    Being lazy will not be tolerated

    I expect you to all participate in class discussions and hands on activities

    CONSEQUENCES FOR RULE AND TARDY VIOLATIONS

    1st  A warning will be given

    2nd – 3rd: Conference with the student

    4th+ : A referral will be made to the Administration

    ABSENCES RULE

    After the 8th unexcused absence in a semester a report is sent to the attendance office

    After the 9th unexcused absence in a semester the student may be dropped from the class

    There is a $20 FEE associated with the class to Pay for the CPR Certification, please make sure you pay or you will not obtain the CPR Certification
