    Late/Absence Policies

    Tests/Quizzes

Students who miss the day of the test/quiz only:

Because no new content was given on the day of the test, any student absent on the day of the test will be given the test on the day they return to school.

Students who miss the days leading up to the test, but are present on test day:

Students who miss new content days leading up to the test will be given one or more additional days upon their return to school to prepare for the test.

Students who miss days leading up to the test, but did not miss any new content, are expected to take the test on the day they return with the other students.

Students who are taking a make-up test will do so in another teacher's room during the regular class period.  The make up test follows the same constraints (time, allowed materials, etc) as was given to the other students.  Make-up testers are not permitted at any time to have the test in their possession while unsupervised.  Doing so will void the test.  The most common example is students returning back to class, with the test in hand, after completing the test.  Upon completion of the test, the completed test will remain with the proctoring teacher while the student returns to class.

    Labs

Any student who misses one day of a multi-day lab is permitted to re-join their current lab group and use the group data/graphs.  Any student missing more than one day of a lab, or missing the only data when data was collected, must perform the lab without using any data/graphs obtained by their current group.  If multiple students from different lab groups or even class periods all join together to make-up the lab, they will be permitted to join together as a new group for the purpose of completing that lab as long as the group does not exceed 4 members.  Students who are making-up the lab will most often be given an extended due date that is reasonable in relation to the circumstances.

Each student is entitled to one late lab for the full year.  The purpose of the allowed "late lab" is to accommodate students who have one-time substantial complications that prohibit them from turning in the lab.  Students may be denied the ability to use their "late lab" if they are found to be doing so for non-substantial reasons.

Otherwise, late labs are not accepted.  50%-75% of the lab is completed in class.  If the lab is not 100% complete on the due date, it is expected that the student will submit what has been completed.  If the student is absent the day the lab is due, they will turn in the lab on the day they return to school.

Once graded labs are returned, the student has one week from that day to re-submit the lab for an improved score.  The improved score can not exceed the original score plus 20% of the maximum score.  The student is asked to mark the rubric with the items improved and may resubmit the lab anytime during the one-week period.  These lab corrections are to be done in the lab book itself.  If space is an issue, corrections can be done to the left on the empty back of the prior page.  Any corrections done on torn-out pages will not be considered.  To submit the lab correction, tear the graded rubric off of the returned lab write-up, mark which items you would like regraded, place the rubric in the lab book slightly sticking out (like a bookmark) on the first page of the lab, and place the lab book on my desk.  Do not turn in any torn out pages, including the returned lab write-up.  You may only submit each lab once for corrections.  It is possible to submit a lab for corrections and then earn the same score if no significant corrections were made to the lab book.

Students are permitted to turn in a lab for a zero and then recoup the 20% correction grade as described above.

    Presentations

Presentation points are accumulated progressively over the course of the quarter and there is no opportunity to acquire additional points past the due date for each quarter.

    Homework

    • Worksheets
The purpose of worksheet homework is to have them completed so that we can go over them in class the following day.  For this reason, there is no late credit opportunity given for worksheet homework.

Students who are absent the day the worksheet was handed out can not receive an extension because on the day they return to class they will be immediately given all of the answers and therefore never really did any homework of any kind.  These students will be permitted to use their UT percentage score for the unit or their next worksheet homework grade as the grade for the missing assignment.  This determination must be made on that day the students return and it is the student's responsibility to both make the teacher aware of the situation and remind the teacher on the day the follow-up assignment is due.

Students who are absent the day the worksheet is due will submit their worksheet for credit upon their return to class.

    • UT Assignment

Note: The UT assignment is published through the University of Texas and is used by students throughout the United States and Internationally.  The University of Texas has chosen to use Eastern Standard Time.  This results in the actual time for completion being EARLIER than the published time for completion for our region here in Arizona.  This is announced in class and is the student's responsibility to be aware of this.  Being that these are multi-week assignments that are intended to be done piece-wise over those multiple weeks, this should not pose a problem for any students other than those who wait until the last opportunity to complete the assignment.

There is no late work accepted for UT.  It is the student's responsibility to progressively work through the UT and not wait until the last minute.  Students who have technical problems, emergencies, or are late to submit their request to be enrolled in the class are NOT given an extension on the UT assignment.

At approximately the 3/4 mark of each unit, there will be time scheduled in class to go over the more challenging problems of the UT.  This will be retracted if more than 80% of the class is less than 50% done with the UT.  Should this occur, there will be no class time spent on the UT, and students who met their responsibilities are invited to come after school where they will receive direct assistance on the problems they find challenging.  Students who do not meet their responsibilities are not invited to attend.  This is designed to fit the purpose of UT, which is to be used as a learning tool and not an exercise in completion for points.

Note: Students who miss more than 10 instructional days, without prior arrangements made due to exceptional circumstances may be dropped from the course.
