Third Grade "Big Kahunas" of Mrs. Poet's Class

    Dear Parents,

This year, your child will have the opportunity to be the “Big Kahuna of the Week”! While your child is the Big Kahuna, each day of the week will consist of an exciting event or activity to honor him or her and to help us get to know our special classmate.

Monday: Poster Share: The star student will be create a circle map and poster (directions and example sheet to be sent home the Friday before your child is the Big Kahuna) that shares all about them!  They can be as creative and open as they'd like.

Tuesday: Favorite Book: The star student brings one of his or her favorite books to read to the class (or have the teacher read to the class) at our Morning Meeting.  If they bring in a chapter book, we'll only read a few chapters.

Wednesday: Parent Letter: Parents, you will write a letter to the class telling us how special your child is to you.  Send the letter in a sealed envelope to school with your child, and I will read the letter to the class at Morning Meeting.  The content of the letter is up to you, but you may want to choose from one of the following ideas: describe special or funny stories about your child for the class to hear, write a silly or serious poem about your child, tell us some neat things we may not know about your child, send silly or special pictures with a letter describing the pictures, or write a short story with your child as the main character.

Thursday: Treasured Trinkets: Please help your child collect up to 5 special items from home and send them to school with your child on Thursday to share with his or her classmates during Morning Meeting.  Try to encourage your child to choose items that have some sort of meaning rather than just a collection of toys.

Friday: Star Friends:  The star student will be presented with a friendship booklet created by his or her classmates. The booklet will be made of friendly letters that each student will write about your child.  Feel free to also send in a treat (maybe your child's favorite snack or dessert item) to share with the class!

I will let you know the weekend before it's your child's week to be the Big Kahuna so that you can help him/her prepare. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask. I hope your child enjoys his/her special week!
