    PBS Course Description (Casteel)

    In Principles of BioMedical Science, students investigate the death of Anna Garcia. Was it foul play? Was it an accident? Or did Anna simply have a natural death? While learning and training skills like blood spatter analysis, crime scene investigation, DNA analysis, body systems modeling, and more, students will have a much better insight on the various clues they pick up at the crime scene. And with that, they will create a final paper using multiple tools from Microsoft Office that aid in the final court case.

    A secondary goal is to have students create a portfolio of potential careers in the field and to do enough research to volunteer, intern, or further gain experience for a particular field.

    Learning and Growing by Investigating Medical Mysteries

    Working with the same equipment and tools used by lab professionals, PLTW Biomedical Science students are empowered to explore and find solutions to some of today’s most pressing medical challenges. Through scaffolded activities that connect learning to life, students step into the roles of biomedical science professionals and investigate topics including human medicine, physiology, genetics, microbiology, and public health. Students work together in teams to find unique solutions, and in the process, learn in-demand, transferable skills like critical thinking and communication. They will create presentations and projects that will detail their knowledge and findings to non-professionals. See the following projects for example:
