Paige Godrich's 5th Grade class created "scratch art" to create excitement around the new school year and to encourage relationship building in her classroom.

San Marcos partnered with Read on Chandler to host a "Make Way for Books" story school celebration on Friday. Congratulations to San Marcos Elementary teacher Jolene Gallup who earned National Board Re-Certification in December. Achieving National Board Certification is a rigorous process, and was designed to develop, retain, and recognize accomplished teachers and to generate ongoing improvement in schools nationwide. Our San Marcos Flag Club was trained by the Chandler High School Jr ROTC students in August. (Scott Goodson is the Commandant of Cadets.) This awesome group of 6th graders raise and lower our flag each day, using the care and etiquette they learned in their training. San Marcos Elementary KSMB News Team sponsored by teachers Jolene Gallup and Scott Rothman is comprised of a dedicated group of fifth and sixth graders. They arrive early daily to create and deliver the news to all San Marcos students.

Former NFL player Mark Maddox donated books to support our San Marcos readers home libraries through his Help1 Foundation. Reading Specialist Debra Vickman organized the partnership to help her students grown their love of reading outside of the classroom.

In response to the decision to shut off water fountains at San Marcos Elementary out of concern of spreading COVID-19, Sun Lakes Rotary has donated 400 refillable water bottles to the school to ensure that all students can stay hydrated.

San Marcos Student Council attended the Student Leadership Conference and showcased their leadership skills among peers in the district with their theme "Exploring BIG Ideas." Student council students loved this day of SPIRIT and leadership growth!

Superintendent's Student Citizenship Award winner: Gerardo Juarez Jamaica is a special young man who takes his learning seriously and always produces quality work. He is a positive leader with at San Marcos, encouraging and motivating students to be the best versions of themselves. He also sets a great example for his younger siblings. Gerardo is also an integral member of our KSMB News team where he exhibits responsibility and initiative.

San Marcos teacher Lauren Cundiff joined teachers Michelle Capriotti (Casteel High) and Melissa Lu (Perry High) to represent the district and their schools in the Desert Financial "Random Acts of Kindness" float in the Fiesta Bowl Parade. Jennifer Holden's 5th Grade class partnered with their Kindergarten buddy class for an afternoon of science experiments. The Arizona Science Center came out to conduct experiments, including extracting DNA from a strawberry.

Amy Nettles and Lauren Delfino-Karl's classes created beautiful "BEST PART OF ME" artwork for their classroom windows. Second graders created artwork depicting the BEST parts of themselves. Staff and students LOVE walking by the positive and thoughtful messaging of this second grade art project.

San Marcos 5th and 6th Graders competed in the 2019 Spelling Bee. Teachers were impressed by all students, but ultimately 6th grader Sayra took 1st place and 5th grader Derion took 2nd place. Congratulations to all who participated.

Governing Board member Karen McGee has a talent for crafting. She recently made 14 snowmen and donated them to preschoolers at San Marcos Elementary. The children LOVE them -- and the snowmen are enjoying their new home, too!

Media Specialist Jolene Gallup hosted Arizona Cardinals quarterback (and Chandler High alumni) Brett Hundley for an afternoon of reading. Brett Hundley visited San Marcos for a "Cardinals Milk and Cookies" event. Students danced with Big Red, had story time with Brett Hundley, and enjoyed milk and cookies. San Marcos students left with SMILES, high fives and autographed backpacks. Thank you, Arizona Cardinals, for supporting San Marcos students and encouraging the LOVE of reading!

Select second grade families were invited to "Family Engagement Reading Night." Students were able to enjoy a movie and popcorn while parents worked with the Engagement Team -- Stephanie Clark, Jolene Gallup, Amy Nettles, Lauren Delfino-Karl, Jennine Ballew, Jennifer Davis and Debbie Vickma -- on strategies to help their children become better readers. Parents left equipped with support, materials and games to help their children succeed.

San Marcos first graders in Joan Scharich's class took a field trip to visit the Soltera Senior Living Community. Students enjoyed reading books and sharing stories with their new friends at Soltera.

The Chandler Education Foundation (CEF) Woo Hoo Patrol visited San Marcos to award three CEF Grants which will be put towards:- Classroom Peace Corners
- a Campus Wide Sensory Path, and
- Sensory integration tools to manage behaviors and maximize student engagement

Judy Thompson's pre-K class had fun creating shapes and artwork using just ten Q-tips (no more, no less) in their Q-tips challenge! Judy was so proud of their thoughtful creativity and taking on the challenge!

San Marcos fifth grade students in Gary Johnson, Jennifer Holden, and Ashly Raymond's classes visited Feed My Starving Children (FMSC) to help pack nutritious meals for hungry children around the world. In partnership with the San Marcos student council, they were able to raise $500 to donate to FMSC while also gaining hands-on experience.

The San Marcos Party Patrol (a spirited group of teachers and support staff) scheduled a mid-week pick-up for our campus. Teachers lined up early for "The Traveling Cup" who provided delicious coffee beverages to energize our teachers and staff for the day!

San Marcos KSMB News Crew is made up of 5th and 6th grade students and led daily by our AMAZING Club Sponsors, Jolene Gallup and Scott Rothman. Our KSMB News team produces and delivers the morning news EVERY day! Daily production includes announcements, student highlights, lunch menu, "This Day in History," the pledge, and our WORD of the Day! Students are then challenged to get "caught" using the Word of the Day! Dr. Henderson loves hearing our vocabulary expanding!

San Marcos preschool and pre-K classrooms received a visit from the Arizona Health Zone to learn about the benefits of eating healthy veggies. They had a chance to create art with the veggies and taste their veggie creations.
