Welcome!
Welcome to Willis! I am excited about the upcoming school year! We are back in houses and I am part of the A-House (team name coming later).
My Education and Professional Background
I come from a family of teachers. My grandmother began her teaching career in a one-room school house and taught elementary students until she retired. My mother taught every grade from kindergarten through college-age students. Her great love was teaching reading, so it's not exactly a coincidence that I ended up in 7th grade language arts.
I didn't start out teaching, but after graduating from Marquette University, I decided that I really wanted to teach. So, I returned to my hometown in Iowa to get my teaching certificate from Iowa Wesleyan College. After receiving my teaching certificate, I moved to Arizona. A few years after working at Willis, I decided to pursue my Master's in Education in English as a Second Language from Arizona State University.
My Educational Philosophy
I believe that students learn from a hands-on approach. I do not expect students to understand something the first time they do it. Students need to be confident in what they are learning. Usually that means we practice skills and strategies until they feel comfortable.
The Choice is Yours! Why Choose Willis Junior High?
I have been at Willis Junior High School since 1998 because of the amazing students and their families who come through here. I also love the staff who work here. We will all do our best to help whoever needs it. Willis is truly one, big family.
