I have lived in Arizona for about 33 years. I was born in Colorado, but at this point, I consider myself an Arizona native! I am a highly-qualified English teacher with 18 years teaching experience at the high school and college level. My educational philosophy is that every student can learn and can speak Spanish. I enjoy teaching and speaking Spanish and I think our classroom and school should be enjoyable. Finally, I completed my Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction (Curriculum and Cultural Studies) in 2008. All three degrees are from ASU. I started teaching for the CUSD in 1999. I started my career at AJHS (6 years), then moved to BHS (3 years), and have been at CHS ever since. I started teaching part-time with Chandler Online Academy in 2020.

I am a native of the East Valley. I graduated from Arizona State University in May 2007 where I studied History and Economics, and completed my Masters in Secondary Education from there in August 2008. This will be my twelfth year teaching, and my fifth year teaching with Chandler Online Academy. I was awarded the James Madison Memorial Fellowship for Arizona for 2018, and am pursuing a Master's degree in History from Harvard University. As part of my fellowship, I spent the summer at Georgetown In addition to my responsibilities at Basha, I serve on the Teacher Advisory Board for the National Portrait Gallery of the Smithsonian Institution, traveling to DC quarterly for meetings and trainings, and serve on the Bill of Rights Institute’s Teacher Council. I enjoy watching sports and Jeopardy!, reading, and mowing the lawn and watering plants.

Educational Philosophy:
Teachers, educational institutions, and curriculum provide unique avenues for students to be stretched, edified, and strengthened by their learning experiences. Often times students ask, "Why do I need to know this? I'll never use this in 'real-life'." Though a specific concept I teach may not ever be revisited in a student's adult life, I know the experiences students encounter while attending school, (whether online or in-person), will teach them lessons that prepare them for the "real-world". They may experience failures that they may not feel they can push past. Yet, they will also feel success that will motivate them to do better, to be better, and to set new goals. Progress, no matter how small, drives my enthusiasm to teach. Every child, has the potential to grow. It is my goal to show them that they are capable of success.

Mr. Scot Lewis has been the director of bands at Andersen Junior High School since 2007. Under his direction, the Concert and Cadet Bands have attended festivals sponsored by Chandler Gilbert Community College and ABODA. The Jazz Band annually attends the Northern Arizona University and Chandler Gilbert Community College Jazz Festivals. Mr. Lewis has also had the opportunity of taking previous bands to The Blue Cross Blue Shield Fiesta Bowl Pageant of Bands. Mr. Scot Lewis earned his BA in Instrumental Music Education from Arizona State University and his MA in Education Administration from University of Phoenix. Prior to directing at AJHS, Mr. Lewis directed bands at Chandler High School ('03-'07), Bogle Junior High School (99'-'03), and Jordan Elementary ('95-'99).

My goal for each of my students is that he/she becomes a life-long learner with the critical thinking skills it takes to be successful in the 21st century. On my way to Tucson in 1984 I ran out of gas in Tempe and decided to stay. I received both a Bachelor of Fine Arts (1987) and a Masters of Education in Educational Media & Computers (1997) from Arizona State, both were years ASU made a Rose Bowl appearance. I have taught high school art since 2005 and computer graphics at Chandler-Gilbert Community College since 2000. I feel Chandler has the most challenging and robust fine arts programs in the East Valley. The 18-19 school year will be my 1st year with Chandler Online Academy.
Educational Philosophy:
I believe study in the visual arts challenges students to think creatively, develop intuition, and become visual problem-solvers. I have found the method of facilitating rather than dictating to be a highly beneficial style of teaching. There is something for everyone. This philosophy of teaching hits every learner. Not everyone learns the same or is interested in the same thing. It is important for our learners to think like historians, not like Jeopardy contestants. In treating our classroom like a lab for historians, our students can find something that they are interested in. Allowing student choice is a huge portion of my educational philosophy. Giving students choice allows them to explore what they have interest in, thus History is so rich that it allows students to go off into their own part of it, what they are engaged in. When we look at the continuance of our democracy, we look at the citizen’s ability to effectively participate in that process. Knowing your stance, having the ability to look at the opposition, and defend your opinion with evidence that is valid is the cornerstone of democracy.

I am a native Arizonian and grew up in the east valley. I attended Arizona State University for my undergraduate degree in Interdisciplinary Studies with a focus in psychology and communications. I returned to school for my masters in special education, also at ASU. I have been teaching at Payne Junior High School since 2013. Christopher Holley is the Director of Bands at the Arizona Preparatory Academy and Director of Choirs for the ACP Oakland, Willis Jr, and have been teaching with Chandler Online Academy since 2019. Mr. Holley holds a B.A. degree in Music Education and Music Performance from Fort Lewis College CO, and a Masters of Music degree from the University of New Mexico NM. Mr. Holley has 25 years experience teaching, arranging, and composing music for the High School and Jr. High levels. Mr. Holley is a frequent educational clinician at the Arizona Music Educators Association Conference. He is a member of the National Association for Music Education, Arizona Music Educators Association, Arizona Band and Orchestra Directors Association, and the Percussive Arts Society.

After a career as an interpreter for over 8 years, I obtained my B.A in Education from Ottawa University and a Masters Degree in School Counseling. I have been teaching for over 10 years and enjoy every minute of it!
Educational Philosophy:
I believe that every child has the right to receive the best education possible. I believe that the special people chosen to provide that education must make sure everything they teach, say, do and believe comes from the heart. I believe that along with education comes personal growth, self respect, and respect for others and a yearning for knowledge that stays an entire lifetime. I feel that a great teacher learns just as much from each of their students than their students learn from them. I believe that a successful classroom is a classroom that doesn't know the difference between work and fun, their work IS fun. A successful teacher doesn't teach to a book, they teach to the day. They are flexible, energetic, understanding and seize each day as a new opportunity to impact the lives of their students.

I see myself as the facilitator of the room and work to create a student-centered environment where the students lead. Therefore, developing historical skills is emphasized and those skills are used to effectively and responsibly explore the historical and political topics that arise within class.

When our bodies are health and strong our minds are too. Coaching Physical Education is a great way for me to combine my love of fitness with my love of education. I can't wait to meet all of you and be apart of your journey!
Educational Background:
I earned my Bachelor of Arts in Education with endorsements in Elementary Education, Reading, and Math from Eastern Washington University in 2007. I also earned a Master's of Education in Curriculum and Instruction from Washington State University with endorsements in Early Childhood Education and English Language Learner in 2011. I completed my Physical Education endorsement in 2017. I spent the first 4 years of my teaching career teaching Kindergarten and 1st grade in my hometown of Spokane, Washington before moving to Chandler. I began teaching in Chandler 2011 where I taught 3rd grade for 6 years and now coach Physical Education at Andersen Junior High, and I have been with Chandler Online Academy since 2018. I could not be more honored to work for such an amazing district. Being a lifelong learner who is dedicated to education is engrained in every fiber of who I am!

I believe that every child has the ability to learn in their own way and it is my goal to honor the individual needs of each child. I have high standards for students and what they can achieve in the classroom. They are supported in meeting those standards through a variety of teaching methods in which I can honor the strengths of each child. It is my deepest passion to help shape well-round, whole-hearted, critical thinkers who have the passion and desire to make a difference in the world. To do this I teach kids to take responsibility for their actions, set goals and work hard to achieve them, see the good in others and find ways to honor their own strengths, and be team players in our community. While working as a graphic designer for print production, I earned my BFA in Media Arts from the School of Visual Arts in Manhattan. Later going back to pursue a Masters in Fine Arts Education and teacher certification, I began teaching art in New York and New Jersey. My career continued to evolve after relocating to Arizona with my family I began working for a non profit called The Artyard Project, that helps artists develop their skills and business acumen. The Artyard Project confirmed my commitment and better trained me to work as a Career &Technical Education specialist. I began teaching with Chandler Online in 2019.

Begin with the end in mind making as many positive causes toward your goals and you create your own current and currency. The only thing that beats a failure is a try. The only true failure is in not trying. Students are encouraged to embark on the journey to develop their own creative voice and integrity.
