     Physical Education Syllabus

Course Overview: The Chandler High School physical education department is based on the premise that physical activity and participation are important for all students, regardless of their level of athletic skill or ability. Throughout various activities, students in our program will learn how to incorporate physical activity into their daily lives. In addition, we hope to instill enjoyment of physical activity, as well as an understanding of the importance of maintaining physical fitness.

Note: A year (2 semesters) of PE credit is required to graduate

    Student Expectations:

    1.      Respect the rights and property of others

    2.      Follow directions

    3.      Be prepared for class – dressed out

    4.      No cell phones, headphones, make-up, food, drink (except water), or gum in the activity area

    5.      Keep your locker and locker room clean

    6.      Students must have the official Chandler High PE uniform

    7.      Abide by the rules of the CHS handbook at all times during class

Evaluation Process - The following will be used to determine your grade:

    A.    Participation Points – each day of PE is worth a set amount of points (usually 10-20). In order to receive all of your points you must:

    v     Come to class

v     Dress out completely in the proper PE uniform (CHS PE shirt, Athletic shorts, NO denim and closed-toed tennis shoes)

v     Participate in class activities the entire class period

    B.     Written Work – PE notebook, quizzes and tests

    C.    Absences/Make-up – If you have an EXCUSED absence, see your PE teacher for a make-up assignment. If you do not turn in make-up work, you will lose points for ANY absence.

    D.    Grading Scale:

    v     90 – 100% = A

    v     80 – 89% = B

    v     70 – 79% = C

    v     60 – 69% = D

    v     0 – 59% = F

    PE Uniforms:

v     Every student is required to purchase the official CHS PE shirt (make sure to write your FIRST and LAST name on your shirt).

v     Shirts can be purchased from the school Bookstore for $8.00

v     In addition to the CHS PE shirt, all students must wear LONG shorts (blue, black or gray) and closed-toed tennis shoes.

v     During our swim unit, you will be required to bring a swimming suit from home, and a towel. If your suit is a two-piece suit (Girls) you must wear a T-shirt over your swimming suit. You must also wear shoes to and from the swimming pool. (Flip flops or sandals are OK)

v     During cold weather, if we are in an activity that is outdoors, you can bring a sweatshirt or sweatpants to wear OVER your PE uniform. You must still wear your uniform to receive your full participation points.

v     If you forget your PE uniform or just don’t feel like dressing out, you will still be required to participate in the class. However, you will lose points, and you will get sweaty and possibly smelly in your school clothes. If you refuse to participate and follow the teacher’s directions, you will be written in a referral for insubordination.

v     Altered uniforms will result in a non-dress

v     Uniforms MUST be taken home on Fridays to be washed, and brought back ready for Monday.

Non-dress/Tardy consequences: The PE department uses the same policy and consequences that are established for tardies:

                1st non-dress, with participation – warning

1st non-dress, without participation – phone call home

                2nd non-dress, with participation – warning

2nd non-dress, without participation – phone call home

3rd non-dress, with or without participation – phone call home and Community Service w/Security guards during class time.

4th non-dress, with or without participation – phone call home

5th non-dress, with or without participation – referral to Administration

    Lockers:

    1.      Each student is required to provide their own lock

    2.      You can buy one on your own or from the school bookstore.

    3.      Do NOT share lockers, you are responsible for your own locker and your own uniform. If you leave your items in someone else’s locker and they are absent, you will lose your points for the day if you do not dress out.

    4.      Be sure to keep your locker locked at all times. The locker room is not always locked or supervised and anything left open or sitting on the benches is not safe. Please lock your lockers during class and after class and double check that your lock is locked. The PE teachers are not responsible for your belongings – LOCK THEM UP!

    Illness/Injury Policy:

If you are well enough to come to school, but feeling too ill to participate in PE class, or have an injury that prevents you from participating, you must do the following to receive credit:

v     Bring a note signed by a parent with a contact phone number

    v     DRESS OUT

v     Participate in the stretches and any other part of the exercised you feel you can

Chandler High School PE Department Policies and Procedures

In order to increase communication between our coaching staff, parents, and students regarding policy changes for ALL physical education students, we have developed a few guidelines to help ensure that students are accountable for their performance:

Daily points can be accumulated in the following categories:

Dressed in the required PE uniform

Full participation in the daily activity

    Attendance

    1. Non-dress or failure to participate – loss of daily points

    a. On 3rd non-dress = Community Service w/Security guards during class time.

    b. On 5th non-dress = referral to Administration

    c. Students will be expected to participate in street/school clothes when they don’t have the proper attire.

    2. Excused Absences – students can earn back their points by completing the approved activity by an instructor per absence.

    3. PE Uniform = CHS PE T-shirt – available in the bookstore for $8. A t-shirt and shorts are available. Students may wear their own athletic type shorts (loose basketball style). Colors that are acceptable are black, blue or grey.

    4. Students will be required to work out in street/school clothes if they don’t dress out. Refusing to participate will require notification of parent(s) via phone or email and on the 3rd offense, they will receive a referral to the Administration.

Lack of activity destroys the good condition of every human being, while movement and methodical physical exercise save it and preserve it. ~Plato

For Girls’ Physical Education, You Will Need:

    1.      P.E. Uniform:  the grey CHS PE shirt and a pair of blue, black or grey shorts.  You can purchase this from the bookstore for $8.  We expect the students to have their uniforms no later than Monday, August 3, 2009.  If you have any problems obtaining these items, please contact me (contact information listed below).

    2.      Tennis Shoes: the student will be running everyday, they will need a decent pair of closed-toed tennis shoes to prevent injury and to allow them to participate everyday. Socks will need to be worn everyday as well.

    3.      Hair Ties:  the students will be doing physical activities everyday.  For safety reasons, they will need to pull their hair out of their face.  They do not necessarily have to have a ponytail, however, their hair must be out of their face somehow.  For example, headbands or clips are completely appropriate if it keeps their hair out of their eyes.

    4.      Notebook: the students will be taking notes and tests on the various activities we experience.  WE will also be giving them different articles, for homework and reading purposes, and they will need a place to keep them.  Along with their notebooks, they will need the following:

    a.      Four Dividers:  the students will need dividers to separate their notes, journals, articles and any other miscellaneous items they choose to keep for P.E.

    b.      Pens/Pencils:  since the students will be taking notes, they will need pens to write with.  Since they will be taking tests, they will need pencils.

    c.      Pencil Pouch:  in order to keep their notebooks looking nice and to keep everything together, every notebook will need a pencil pouch.

    d.      Other:  there are other items the students may choose to keep in their pencil pouch.  Such items include, but are not limited to, a pink eraser, highlighters, post-it notes, etc.

Their first notebook check will be on Monday, August 3, 2009 (along with their uniform check).  They will need all the materials by then.  If you have any problems obtaining any of these materials, please let us know.

We are well aware of the fact that many of these items are a very unorthodox requirement for P.E.  Our philosophy for physical education is a little different than most.  In our class, your child will learn about the functioning of their body.  They will not just learn HOW to do different activities; they will learn WHY they might even bother to participate.  They will also learn what our bodies are doing during different activities.  We hope to help your child become a lifetime lover of a myriad of activities.  Since those are the expectations we have placed upon ourselves, we must require these few simple items from your child.  Thank you for your cooperation and understanding.  If at any point in time you have questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact us.

    Thank you.
