A Step-by-Step Guide to Beginning the 2021-22 School Year
1. Review the Willis Summer Newsletter (also available in Spanish)
The newsletter provides an overview of our school expectations and policies. This is a good place to begin in order to familiarize yourself with our school expectations and opportunities.
2. Mark your calendar and plan to attend Firebird Day on Friday, July 16 -- anytime between 8:30 and 11:00 am
Firebird day is an opportunity for students, and their families, to visit the campus, pick up their class schedule, and familiarize themselves with the school. In addition, there will be information available about athletics, our breakfast and lunch program, transportation, PTO, and much more. Firebird Day follows an open house format, so feel free to come and go at a time that is convenient for you. Schedules will also be available in Infinite Campus beginning on Friday, July 16.
3. Review and familiarize yourself with the Willis Core Values
Our core values guide our actions and decisions as staff, students, and a school community. Please take the time to carefully review these expectations and be prepared to put them into action from the beginning of the school year. We believe that consistently following our core values will support student growth and success at Willis as well as in the future.
4. If you do not already have an Infinite Campus Parent Portal account, sign-up for one
You may use the Infinite Campus Parent Portal throughout the school year to help your student monitor their progress in their classes, view assignments and grades, and track attendance. This is a valuable communication tool that will keep you up to date on how your student is doing at school and help you determine if they may be in need of additional assistance.
5. Complete a Free and Reduced Lunch application
We ask that ALL of our families take just a few minutes to fill out the online Free and Reduced Lunch application form. This brief process could potentially benefit you as a family and it helps ensure that our school is allocated the resources needed to support our students and families.
6. If your student plans to participate in a sport (at any time during the year) review the information on our Athletics page and create an account on Register My Athlete
We encourage all of our students to find a way to be involved at school -- whether through sports, clubs, or other activities. Athletics are a great way to connect with other students, represent Willis, and get some exercise. Students who plan to participate, must have a physical, create an account on Register My Athlete, and upload required documentation PRIOR to participation in try-outs. This process only needs to be done once each year. Once completed, the student is cleared to participate in any of our sports seasons.
7. Don't stress. We are here to help our students and will make sure their year gets off to a positive start
A new school year provides exciting opportunities, but we also recognize that it can create anxiety. A little bit of that is normal, but we do not want our students to be worried or stressed about the beginning of the school year. We are here to help and we will work with students to be sure that things go smoothly. We encourage our students to ask questions whenever they need direction or additional assistance. It typically takes a few weeks to get into a routine, but our staff will be there to ensure that all of our students have a successful transition to the new school year.
