Galveston Elementary (2021-2022)
Galveston Elementary hosted Envision: Touch-A-Truck and Job Fair with community partners! Kids loved the chance to interact with a variety of trucks, and residents learned about career opportunities and neighborhood survey results. On February 24, Galveston students had a delicious Creole chicken dish created by a prominent African American chef, Chef Franchesca, from Aramark. The kids loved it and the food was delicious! PHOTO ALBUM: Chef Franchesca Visit
Galveston Elementary (2020-2021)
Galveston Elementary ICAN students have been focused on celebrating Black History Month on each Wednesday of the month. They have celebrated African Americans throughout history that have made contributions with inventions. They celebrated Alma Thomas who at the age of 75 became the first African American artist to have a piece displayed at the White House. They celebrated Alexzander Miles who invented the automatic door system for the elevator. On the last Wednesday of the month, they celebrated by doing "Hands of Unity" -- something Dr. Martin Luther King really tried to achieve and as we still try today.

Galveston Elementary students celebrated "Random Acts of Kindness" week by creating a kindness tree. Each "leaf" (heart) on the tree represents a kind act. Students were asked to write down something kind that someone did for them.

Congratulations to sixth grade teacher Melanie Weathers who won the Apple Achievement Award, Bill Berry who was named the Outstanding Volunteer, and sixth grader Daniel Corona who is the Superintendent Citizenship winner from Galveston Elementary for 20201. Read their stories here!

Galveston Elementary sixth grader Angel Rosales was recognized by Chandler Police Department for being a great community member. He was walking to the school's learning lab one morning last week when he noticed two adults taking an Amazon packageoff a porch near campus. Due to his quick thinking, he was able to let the woman at the home know her package was taken and give her a description of the two adults. She was able to track them down and retrieve her package (gifts for her grandkids).

ICAN has its first satellite location at Galveston Elementary. Students have been attending after school creating blooming flowers and neon lava lamps.

Superintendent's Student Citizenship Award winner: Brianna Jacome is a charismatic, hard-working student who always tries her best. She works hard in all subject areas and has made considerable growth. Brianna takes pride in all of her work. She displays a growth mindset every day. Brianna is kind and willing to help her peers or her teachers. Brianna always comes to school with a smile and loves to make people laugh.

Our Lego Lions Robotics Club competed in the First Lego League Robotics Competition at ASU Polytechnic campus in December.

Galveston first graders enjoyed participating in Perry's Smiles of the Season Event on December 4! Students decorated cookies, participated in fun crafts, played in bounce houses and with the artificial snow. They had a blast and were so thankful for the gifts they received at the end of the field trip!

The Family Engagement Team at Galveston Elementary School, held a Movin' On Up Data Night for all families of second graders. Twenty-three enthusiastic families learned and practiced a reading fluency strategy. This reading fluency skill equips families with a research-based strategy with which to assist their child to become a better reader. Childcare was provided, the families became eager, engaged learners, and several left with fun raffle prizes! Families committed to help their child reach a goal set by their family. They left Data Night equipped with support, materials and a better understanding of how to help their child be successful.

Galveston 4th graders enjoyed Water Festival stations at Tumbleweed Park, put on by the City of Chandler and University of Arizona! Students learned about watershed, water conservation, the water cycle, and ground water through hands-on exploration. Water Festival - Photo Album

Galveston Elementary students celebrated Unity Day on Wednesday, Oct. 23. October is National Bullying Prevention Month, and Unity Day is a day in which students unite and wear orange to stand up against bullying and unite in kindness, acceptance, and inclusion. Congratulations to Galveston teacher Jasmine Galloway who was one of three CUSD teachers invited to attend the Arizona Diamondbacks Science of Baseball on April 13 at Chase Ballfield. The Arizona Diamondbacks Science of Baseball provides a mechanism for teachers to help students improve their academic performance. Their goal is to translate students' love of baseball into an appreciation, understanding, and passion of the science and mathematics underlying the sport.

First graders at Galveston Elementary culminated a 3 week study of sun and light including learning about shadows, temperature, and shade. The students practiced the engineering process by trying to solve a problem of cooling off on the playground. The students were challenged to create a model of a shade structure. They worked in teams of 2 and planned, built, and tested the structures.

Congratulations to Galveston Elementary PE teacher Jill Burnley who was one of four CUSD teachers who presented at the Arizona Health and Physical Education State Convention during the week of October 22. Their session was titled "CUSD PE TEACHERS are OPEN to Fitness!"

Galveston kindergarten teacher Denise Castillo won a $500 Supply My Class APS Teacher Award from Arizona Public Service.

Galveston Elementary teacher Maria Hase participated in the Kids Safe Online Cyber Security Awareness Calendar Contest. Her students watched short videos and talked about information related to Cyber Security and bullying. The culmination of the unit was entering the contest. One of her student's Melony, ended up being a winner in the contest! She was honored at an awards ceremony at the Arizona Department of Administration.
