Welcome to Patterson Music! Each student in grades K-4 will have music class once every three days. We have a rotating 6 day schedule, but for K-4 the first three days are the same as the second three days. For example: day 1=4, day 2=5, day 3=6. In 5th and 6th grades, the students choose between Band, Orchestra and General Music (non instrumental class) and that is a 6 day rotating schedule with PE classes. We call the 5th and 6th grade rotation the "Block Rotation".In all the grades, students will experience music in as many ways as we can. Children are naturally creative and expressive and I encourage that in my classroom. We will move and play, sing, play instruments and explore as many ways as we can.We use the building blocks of music, or the elements of music, to learn about the structure of music. The younger students explore these elements without a vocabulary name attached to it. The "playing" we do helps us explore all of those different areas like high and low, fast and slow, loud and soft, etc. Eventually we give "fancy names" or vocabulary names to each of those concepts.Once we understand the structure of music, we get to create our own music! This is an exciting part of music class. Find the link for your child's grade level for a few more specifics for each grade.
