Welcome!
Welcome to first grade at Shumway Leadership Academy. I am so excited about getting to know your family. We will learn to do so many exciting things in first grade. Your child will learn to read, write stories, add, subtract and so much more! I hope to make this year a fun and exciting one!
My Education and Professional Background
I have been teaching since 1988. I hold a Bachelor's in Elementary Education from Missouri State University, a Masters in Curriculum and Instruction from Northern Arizona University and hold Early Childhood and SEI Endorsements. Prior to moving to Arizona in 1996, I taught third grade for two years and first grade for six years in Springfield, Missouri. I have been teaching at Shumway since moving to Arizona. I taught Kindergarten for seven years but I truly love teaching first grade and was so excited when I had the opportunity to do so again. The most wonderful thing about teaching first grade is seeing the tremendous progress that each child makes during the year. My goal is that each child will develop a love for learning and feel successful each and every day in our classroom. I am so proud to teach at Shumway Leadership Academy with a staff that is dedicated to academic excellence.
My Educational Philosophy
I believe that every child will bring something unique and special to our classroom. I will help children develop their potential by believing in them as individuals and helping them learn to believe in themselves. My role as their teacher is to give them the tools to help them learn. I will teach to each child's needs so that all students are successful. My classroom is a caring, safe and accepting environment where all who are here are treated with respect. Students are taught to become responsible for themselves as well as responsible for their own learning. Learning is a continuous process. The children learn from each other, from me and I learn something new every year from them!
