Welcome!

Welcome Shumway Stars! I am so excited to be your child's kindergarten teacher this year! I know this will be a year full of personal and academic growth for your child! I am thrilled to join the Shumway family as I embark on my first year teaching Kindergarten

My Education and Professional Background

Just a few things about me; I graduated Summa Cum Laude in May 2020 from Arizona State University (Go Devils!) with a degree in Elementary Education. Along with my B.A. in Elementary Education, I also received a Structured English Immersion endorsement. I completed my year long student teaching requirement in the Kyrene School District teaching 3rd grade. I have held internships in several different school districts, teaching kindergarten all the way up to high school! I have taught in 2nd grade in CUSD for the past year. I am thrilled to begin my second year teaching here at Shumway. The community and camaraderie here at Shumway make it an incredible place to teach and learn.

My Educational Philosophy

I have always had a passion to teach and could not see myself happily having any other career! I firmly believe that as an educator it is not only my responsibility to teach my students the curriculum, but to teach my students how to become strong leaders. I value individuality, leadership, respect, and vulnerability. It is my goal to create a learning environment that gives all students the comfort to show up every day, willing to make mistakes, and ready to learn from them. I believe that learning will not happen if a child does not feel safe, or loved in their classroom. In my classroom we are one big happy family! Along with valuing individuality, comes a deep understanding that not all students learn the same. As your child’s teacher it is my goal to figure out how they learn best, and to make sure that their specific learning style is met during every lesson.

Welcome!

Hello and welcome to 5th grade! My name is Ashley Erickson and I so excited to be a part of your child's journey here at Shumway Leadership Academy. I am confident that we will have a fantastic year full of opportunity and growth!

My Education and Professional Background

I graduated from Northern Arizona University with my degree in Special and Elementary Education in 2020. This will be my first year teaching 5th grade and I am looking forward to a fun filled and exciting year!

My Educational Philosophy

My philosophy of education is to build a community of students that are active participants in their learning yet have the freedom to be themselves and shine both academically and personally. I am a strong believer that students excel when they are given the chance to express themselves in a way that makes sense to them. It is my objective students in my classroom understand that learning is something we do forever. It is their job as the student to participate, interact, and try their best.

Hi PreK Families!

My Education and Professional Background

My name is Cathy Zinkhon (Ms. Cathy) and I am very excitedto be starting in the Chandler School District this year and especially at Shumway. I am coming from the Mesa School District after being there for the past 10 years. I began in Mesa as an Paraprofessional in a program very similar to the Priority PreK program here in Chandler. After about a year, I knew that I wanted to become a teacher. I have a B.A. in Psychology and my teaching certification in Early Childhood Special Education. A little personal information about me: I'm married and a mom of 2 daughters - one of whom has Autism. I love my pool and making fires in our fire pit to make hot dogs and S'mores. I enjoy watching movies, drinking coffee, and shopping on Amazon!

My Educational Philosophy

My approach to teaching and learning has always been 'You have to reach them, to teach them.' If students are not engaged, if the material isn't relatable to them or interesting to them, the likelihood of them learning and retaining new information is small. As a teacher, part of my job is to take the content and curriculum that is provided and mold and shape it into PreK-sized pieces that students will want to engage in and with. In addition to manipulating and presenting the material to students, as a Special Education teacher, I recognized that children with special needs and all children sometimes need more than just engagement, and they need individual support and instruction at times. Meeting children where they are at in their skill acquisition and moving them forward in their learning is building foundations for future learning.

Welcome!

Hello Friends! I'm so glad you came by to visit our class website. Here you can find out all of the exciting things we are doing in our First Grade classroom in the Chandler Unified School District at Shumway Elementary School in Chandler, Arizona.

My Education and Professional Background

I have been teaching for early childhood education 12 years. While attending Arizona State University, I had the opportunity to teach preschool. I started teaching two year olds and then the following semester I assisted teaching four year olds. I absolutely fell in love with the way they saw the world when I introduced new things! Once I graduated from Arizona State University, I couldn't wait to teach the primary grades. It was why I went back to school! I was lucky to find a position at Shumway teaching preschool in the morning and kindergarten in the afternoon. I taught full-day kindergarten for 5 years and this is my eighth year teaching first grade! I strive to make learning successful for each child. It is fun to watch the growth the students make in just one year!

My Educational Philosophy

I believe that each child is a unique individual who needs a secure, caring, and stimulating atmosphere in which to grow and mature emotionally, intellectually, physically, and socially. It is my desire as a educator to help students meet their fullest potential in these areas by providing an environment that is safe, supports risk-taking, and invites a sharing of ideas. There are three elements that I believe are conducive to establishing such an environment, (1) the teacher acting as a guide, (2) allowing the child's natural curiosity to direct his/her learning, and (3) promoting respect for all things and all people.

Welcome!

Welcome to Kindergarten! I am so pleased that your child will be part of our leaders learning community! Your child's unique gifts can help them learn to their highest potential. Families are a very important part in this process and I look forward to working with you!

My Education and Professional Background

I am a third-generation educator. This is my seventeenth year as a teacher. I began my career in Ohio. I have taught kindergarten, first, and third grade. My husband and I are proud parents of four wonderful children. I received a Master of Education degree from The Ohio State University with certification in elementary education (K-8) and also my Bachelor of Fine Arts cum laude in Dance Performance from The Ohio State University. In addition to my classroom teaching experiences, I am a classically trained dancer and choreographer. During undergrad I performed as a member of The Ohio State University Dance Company. I have a special interest in working with students in such extracurricular activities as school musicals and other dance and choreographed movement opportunities including being the ballet mistress for a youth dance company, and a teacher of pre-ballet, ballet, and modern dance.

My Educational Philosophy

A teacher is blessed with an opportunity to interact with a student for an entire year. I am involved in the development of a human mind; I witness along with the family the stages the child progresses through life. I feel the greatest reward of teaching is when I see a break through with a student who has been struggling with an aspect of their learning. This is exciting because we accomplished something together. Also, I enjoy the challenge of teaching. Enriching the learning environment for highly motivated student and watching him or her move to the next level or unlocking a puzzle for a child who is struggling is hard work but very rewarding. Finally, I decided to become a teacher because I like learning. The process of acquiring education is an adventure into the unknown. I would like to be a part of a student's adventure and to encourage him or her to take risks and develop his or her own ideas. Teaching is where I want to be!

Taking learning risks will challenge students to use critical thinking and problem solving skills that are needed in today's world. I believe in motivating students to be critical thinkers, to show their personal best, and strive to achieve their learning goals. A strong partnership between students, families, and colleagues is necessary to ensure learner growth. I will help students to feel motivated about learning, be proud of their achievements and understand positive choices that keep them on a path to a bright future.

Welcome!

Hello! Welcome to Shumway Leadership Academy! My name is Miss Lawlor and I am the orchestra teacher. I am looking forward to a wonderful school year!

My Education and Professional Background

Miss Lawlor studied viola under Jacquelyn Schwandt at NAU where she earned her Bachelor’s degree in Music Education. While attending NAU, she was an active member in the NAU Symphonic and Chamber Orchestras. Miss Lawlor also participated in the Suzuki training program at NAU. In her youth, she was a member of many orchestral groups including, the Arizona Youth Symphony, the East Valley Youth Symphony, and the Mesa Community College Community Orchestra. She also studied piano for 13 years under the instruction of Franchesa Retford. Before attending NAU, she was an assistant Suzuki strings instructor with Kevin Huang, a professional violinist from Julliard, and she volunteered at Blackbird Music Studio teaching a Suzuki violin class on Saturday mornings. Before joining the Chandler School District, Miss Lawlor was an orchestra director at Queen Creek Middle School and Gateway Preparatory Academy. She currently runs a private studio after school teaching piano and string lessons.

My Educational Philosophy

Music is an academic discipline. It incorporates aspects of math, language, history, reading, and science. It exercises the entire human brain with lessons in technique, rhythm, vocabulary, and notes reading. Students who participate in musical instruction benefit across all academic subjects. I believe every student can learn to appreciate music. Music transcends all other forms of communication. Student participation in orchestral groups encourages an environment of teamwork and self-discipline. It is exciting to watch students of varying abilities come together to achieve a common musical goal. It is my job to help students discover their individual musical potential and to help them develop a lifelong appreciation for this dynamic art.

Welcome!

Welcome to first grade at Shumway Elementary School. I am so excited about getting to know your family. We will learn to do so many exciting things in first grade. Your child will learn to read, write stories, add, subtract and so much more! I hope to make this year a fun and exciting one!

My Education and Professional Background

I have been teaching since 1988. I hold a Bachelor's in Elementary Education from Missouri State University, a Masters in Curriculum and Instruction from Northern Arizona University and hold Early Childhood and SEI Endorsements. Prior to moving to Arizona in 1996, I taught third grade for two years and first grade for six years in Springfield, Missouri. I have been teaching at Shumway since moving to Arizona. I taught Kindergarten for seven years but I truly love teaching first grade and was so excited when I had the opportunity to do so again. The most wonderful thing about teaching first grade is seeing the tremendous progress that each child makes during the year. My goal is that each child will develop a love for learning and feel successful each and every day in our classroom. I am so proud to teach at Shumway Elementary with a staff that is dedicated to academic excellence.

My Educational Philosophy

I believe that every child will bring something unique and special to our classroom. I will help children develop their potential by believing in them as individuals and helping them learn to believe in themselves. My role as their teacher is to give them the tools to help them learn. I will teach to each child's needs so that all students are successful. My classroom is a caring, safe and accepting environment where all who are here are treated with respect. Students are taught to become responsible for themselves as well as responsible for their own learning. Learning is a continuous process. The children learn from each other, from me and I learn something new every year from them!
