• Visual Arts Syllabus

What do I want you to accomplish?

    • Develop skills for communicating visually and verbally through visual art.

    • Gain confidence in talking about and creating works of art.

    • Learn more about yourself through art.

    • Expand your knowledge of artists and art historical trends and periods.

What are we going to do?

    • Make art: We will be creating artwork with various materials such as paint, pencil, marker, clay, wire, fabrics, and cardboard. We will be inspired by the art of artists from history, artists of today, and artists from all over the world.

    • Explore Cultures: As we learn artistic processes, we will discover the origin of different types of art and what influences inspire people to create and generate ideas and creative solutions.

    • Develop an Opinion: We will be viewing various works of art from multiple points of time and in many different styles. As we look into the works and their backgrounds, you are expected to decide which works you connect with, can appreciate most, and enjoy. You are also going to discover what types of art you dislike and what makes that art less appealing to you, personally.

    Expectations:

    • Effort: Give every assignment your very best effort. Follow the directions of each assignment, ask questions on things that you aren't certain of, and use your time wisely.

    • Participation: Get involved in class discussions, engage in assignments, clean up after yourself, and stay on task for the entire class period. Social interaction in art class is encouraged! Make sure you are respectful of others and don’t speak over the teacher or other students in discussions. Also, watch your volume and conversation topics. The vibe is a hip restaurant, not a sporting event!

    • Open-Mindedness: Be willing to try new things and have fun with it!

Appreciation: Have an appreciation for the dozens of supplies that are provided for you. Take care of brushes, tables, clay, paint, etc. Use them for their intended purpose, do not be wasteful, and clean when you are finished working. Appreciate the time of others. Do not waste the class’ time by disrupting lessons.

    How will I be graded?

    • 60% Projects: Final projects will be graded on craftsmanship, ambition, engagement with assignments, and your overall final product. All projects are due one week after the date they were assigned. I will grade all artwork at that point. After you receive your grade, you will have three days to revise your artwork. This gives you an opportunity to improve your grade. Unexcused late work will NOT receive full credit. In order for you to complete all projects on time, you will need to work the entire class period. All work is to be taken off the drying rack and handed in to the FINISHED tray on my desk. If you are absent, it is your responsibility to check google classroom to make up any assignments you missed. Feel free to email me or visit me if I made a mistake on your grade. I appreciate students who are learning to advocate for themselves and recognize that I make mistakes from time to time!

    • 25% Daily Work: Participation is expected and essential for your success in this class. Work bell to bell every day. The participation grades include in-class assignments, clean up and care of supplies, discussions, and critiques.

    • 15% Homework and Sketchbook: Any late assignments will not receive full credit unless it is due to an excused absence. Homework assignments will be given from time to time and may include sketchbook assignments, research for projects, bringing common items from home, photography, etc.

    Grading Scale: 100-90=A 89-80=B 79-70=C 69 or below=F
