Dear Students and Parents,
The Auxier Talent Show is scheduled for Friday, May 17th, in the multipurpose room at Auxier. There will be 2 performances: a performance during the school day for students, and a performance after school at 6 pm for family. Tryouts will be held on Monday May 6th, and Tuesday May 7th in the music room. Students will need to turn in the permission slip at the end of this packet, acknowledging you have read the rules and you have parent permission. Each act will also need to turn in an entry form that can be printed or received from Mr. Kantzos, which tells us about your act. There is a Sign-Up Genius parents will use to sign their kids up for an audition. The link can be found on Mr. Kantzos’s website, a QR code to his website is on the back of this page. The permission slip, entry form, and audition sign up are all due May 3rd. No switching of days will be allowed, but if there is an unavoidable conflict, contact Mr. Kantzos. The judges ask that you please come prepared for tryouts as if it were the actual performance.
Rules for Auditioning
-
Come to the audition with an act that is ready for performance. We will be judging auditions as if they were being performed in the Talent Show.
-
All performances must have an appropriate elementary school theme. This includes, but is not limited to: the music, dialogue, costumes, and movements. No matter how good your performance is, you will not be considered if there is any strong language, suggestive themes, or inappropriate references. NO EXCEPTIONS. Please contact Mr. Kantzos if you are unsure of your music choice.
-
All performances must be no longer than 3 minutes for soloists and 5 minutes for a group act. Any act that exceeds these time limits will not be chosen.
-
All forms must be turned in before or on May 3rd. This includes a permission slip for each performer, an entry form for each act, and a sign up. For a group act, each performer needs an individual permission slip, but only one entry form is needed for the whole group.
-
Each student may try out for one act only.
-
Piano, and mats will be provided, if needed. For music related materials, see below. Anything else needs to be provided by the performers.
In Regards to Music
-
We will have a speaker that can be connected to through a USB-C adapter or a lightning cable adapter.
-
You can also choose to email Mr. Kantzos your music file/Youtube link/Apple Music link beforehand for him to play.
-
If you have an act that requires only part of a song or a certain section, then it is completely fine to abruptly stop or pause the music when it reaches the time limit. Mr. Kantzos can/will edit the music files for the Talent Show performance.
-
If you are singing a song, it is best to have a karaoke track or some kind of accompaniment. You may sing unaccompanied.
Criteria for Acceptance
-
Students will be judged by a panel of judges that consists of staff from Auxier.
-
Auditions will be scored out of 20 based on:
-
Preparation (5)
-
You may lose points for: missing dance moves, forgetting lines/lyrics, bad intonation, bringing an incomplete performance
-
-
Showmanship (5)
-
You may gain points for: speaking loudly and clearly, having good stage presence, being captivating, being humorous, if your performance is exciting
-
-
Originality (5)
-
You may gain points for: performing an original dance or song, having an uncommon talent like juggling or a stand-up routine
-
-
Appropriateness (5)
-
Remember, anything that is not school appropriate will not be considered.
-
This refers more to if your talent or act works well on a stage or is appropriate for a Talent Show. For example, running really fast is an impressive talent, but it is not really appropriate for a Talent Show
-
This also includes how concise your performance is. You may lose points in the category if your act seems to have a lot of filler
-
-
-
It is important to note that none of these are completely exclusionary. For example, you may lose some points for Originality if your dance is copied from somewhere else, but you can make up for that if it is prepared well and exciting. Or if you are a really funny person you may gain points for Showmanship, but you might lose points in Preparation if your jokes aren't prepared well enough or lose points in Appropriateness if your jokes are untasteful.
Please fill out the permission slip and the Entry Form and turn them into Mr. Kantzos by Friday, May 3rd. You can download them at the top of this page.
No permission slips will be accepted after this date. If you are performing with a group, each member of the group must turn in their own permission slip. A group will not be allowed to try out if not all the slips are turned in on time. Address any questions to Mr. Kantzos at: kantzos.alexander@cusd80.com. Parents must be present at auditions. Have your child bring snacks if they must wait. Students waiting will not have supervision. The final acts will be announced May 8th (the day after tryouts) and will be posted on Mr. Kantzos’s CUSD website, and outside his door. The MANDATORY dress rehearsal will be May 14th, 3:15 – 5:00 after school. We will be going in performance order and will not be able to accommodate those who may have prior engagements who want to go early.
Thank you for your interest in our Talent Show! Please save this form for the dates and times. We are very excited to hear your auditions.
