    Welcome!

Welcome to the Shumway Sharpener. Our goal in the library is to prepare students for success in school and life. Students can come to the library for a place to read, write, craft, puzzle, or design.

Some Shumway Stars come to the library for specialized reading instruction to meet their reading goals based on benchmark and progress monitoring data. Lexia online and various multi-sensory and hands-on activities are used to review, re-teach, remediate, and/or reinforce concepts taught in the general education classroom. Students work on the five components of reading.

Phonics =  looking for vowels and word parts
Phonemic awareness = listening to all the sounds in a word
Vocabulary = trick words that don't follow the rules and new words to our English language
Fluency = Read in the tone and speed that you would talk
Comprehension = Make pictures in your head about what you are reading

    My Education and Professional Background

I have been increasing my reading expertise for over 20 years.  I earned my elementary education degree from Blackburn College and a master’s degree in curriculum and instruction from Northern Arizona University.  I am trained in several research-based literacy programs such as the Wilson Language System and am a certified Wilson Dyslexia Practitioner.  I also hold reading specialist, early childhood, media specialist and English as a second language endorsements.  Additionally, I am an Arizona Dyslexia Training Designee.

    My Educational Philosophy

I believe that every student is a unique individual academically and emotionally. Each student is the leader of his/her goal setting and learning achievement. It is my responsibility, as an educator, to guide and provide students with the necessary academic tools for them to attain success in reading.
