    Welcome!

My name is Ms. Jamie Johnson. I love being the General Music teacher at Knox Elementary School! This is my 9th year at Knox and 17th year teaching in the public school setting. My favorite hobby besides music is SCUBA diving! I have been diving in many different locations, played with an octopus, swam with sharks, eels and sea lions, sea tortoises and sea horses, gathered lots of shells on the beach, watched the sun set into the ocean, and slept on the beach as the waves softly sang me to sleep.

    My Education and Professional Background

I received my Bachelor of Arts degree in Music Education from University of Arizona and a master’s degree from Grand Canyon University in Curriculum and Instruction with an emphasis in technology. I taught for 8 years in Apache Junction before coming to Chandler Unified School District. As director of Academy of Creative Learning, I have directed youth musicals, choreographed and taught dances, coached budding actors and singers, designed and made countless costumes, props and sets, taught classes in guitar and piano, music reading, music theory, playing by ear, jazz and blues techniques to adults and youth for over 20 years.

    My Educational Philosophy

At KGA, we have a music program that will help students achieve both an aesthetic and academic understanding of music, as well as practical music skills. The general music curriculum focuses on meeting the Arizona State Arts Standards and the National Arts Core Standards in addition to the National Standards for Music Education. One of my goals in music education at the elementary level is to lay the groundwork for music literacy through a balance of activities in singing, instrument playing, note reading, improvisation, composition, music listening, music history, movement and dance.
