COST: $100 (season)
Additional costs might also include: replacement parts, additional family/friend donations and/or sponsorship (to help us fund this very expensive sport!), and possible Worlds Competition travel expenses (if qualify for)
Robotics is a TIME INTENSIVE SPORT! In order for teams to even have a shot at winning competitions, ranking well in skills standings, and qualifying for Worlds attendance by winning at the state level, students must have a large number of hours per week for building, testing and practicing their sport. This could add up to 10-15 hours a week afterschool.
Teams will meet THREE to FIVE days per week afterschool during the season, August through May. We will always meet Tuesday through Thursday until 5:00pm and then add in Monday and/or Friday depending on the current competition schedule or building/practicing needs of our teams week to week.
What is VEX Robotics?
Not all robotics programs are the same, so your prior experience in robotics, other STEM classes or coding programs might not directly apply to our VEX program and our robotics teams might not be what you are expecting. Please review the VEX Robotics program websites for further clarification.

Limited Spots Available
Space on an ACP Middle School Robotics Team is extremely limited and is determined through a selection process. Since there are always more students interested in participating than we have available spots, the expectations for team participation and contribution is high. Please review the following expectations, rules and team information and contact Mrs. Meyer if you have any questions.
EXPECTATIONS
- Quality team members who best contribute to this sport do the following things: They learn their sport outside of school. They do additional research, watch competition videos, develop engineering plans, teach themselves programming skills at home, participate in or read VEX robotics blogs. If you aren’t interested in spending time LEARNING and DEVELOPING your robotics skills beyond VEX meetings, then this might not be the best fit for you.
- Be present and participate in building and programming your team’s robot.
- Contribute to recording the design, build, test and practice process by recording detailed meeting notes, drawings/sketches, design updates, competition strategy, goal setting, progress evaluation, etc. in the team's engineering design notebook.
- Be a team player! You must be able to work well with other team members, remain respectful, productive and contribute to your team overall!!!!
- Have a strong work ethic and positive attitude!!
- Maintain passing grades in all ACP courses, C’s or higher.
- Attend competitions. VEX Competitions are held on Saturdays at various locations around the valley and are typically run from around 7am-5:30pm. All team members are expected to stay until the conclusion of the event and clean up. We anticipate that teams will participate in 3-5 competitions during the VEX competition season.
- Attend scheduled meetings after school and be picked up in a timely manner.
- Be willing to dedicate your time and attention to this sport! This means making a choice to focus on robotics over other options which might interfere with the VEX robotics season (August - May). Unfortunately, students selected to be on a VEX team will most likely not be able to be in other sports or clubs that interfere with afterschool work times or Saturday competitions. Since this is a TEAM sport and each member's participation affects the entire team unit, it is also VERY important that families are willing and able to adjust afterschool and weekend schedules around our demanding schedule.
(This is just like expectations to attend practices for any sports team and is not optional. Students who miss build time and/or competitions may be removed from the robotics team. Also, students who are consistently picked up late after school may also be removed from the team.)
