Welcome!
Greetings! My name is Jamaila LoMeli, and this is my first year with John Andersen Junior High School; I am also going in to my 16th year of teaching. Here at AJHS, I am teaching English Language Development and System 44 courses, and I am also the English Language Coordinator for our site.
My Education and Professional Background
I graduated from the University of California at Riverside with a Bachelor of Arts in Humanities and Social Sciences Interdisciplinary Studies: Italian Studies. In January 2003, I graduated from Hunter College, of the City University of New York, with my Master of Arts in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL), combined with completing New York State requirements to receive my teaching certificate. I began teaching in an English program for immigrant students in the CUNY Language Immersion Program. Upon my return to California, I taught second grade and continued teaching Adult ESL/ELD. In 2010, I received my Arizona teacher certification with Full ESL Endorsement. I have been teaching in Arizona with a focus on Structured English Immersion and ELD; however, I have also taught English Language Arts. I have taught middle and high school students in public school settings, as well as in secure care facilities, where I worked with unaccompanied minors, and in juvenile detention.
Over the years, I have taken various courses for my own personal and professional growth, such as drawing and watercolor classes, Native American Literature, and school administrator-related courses.
My Educational Philosophy
I believe that all children are capable of success, and that my role in the classroom is not only one as an educator, but also a facilitator to enhance each student's learning process. Our time in the classroom is short-term, but my goal is that the skills students pick up will be stepping stones that lead them towards greater successes throughout their lifetime.
