• Do I have to read the book of the month?

    Posted by:

The book of the month is optional.  If you would like to read it, we will briefly discuss the books at our 2nd meeting of each month.  If you would prefer to not read the book, you can still learn cool things from our brief discussion.

  • Won't the light pollution of Phoenix make it harder to see the stars?

    Posted by:

It is true that you will see many, many more stars under a Montana sky than you will here in Phoenix.  But there can be advantages to seeing less.  Clusters of stars that are visible in a darker environment can also obscure a view of the basic shape of the constellations.  This is not true in all cases, but in short, light pollution will not usually be a factor.

  • It all looks the same to me; How will I be able to see anything in the sky?

    Posted by:

You would be very surprised at the things that you will notice in the sky once you begin to recognize the basic shapes of constellations and asterisms.  After just a few views of an open sky, you will be able to pick them out with ease.

  • Can I bring a friend?

    Posted by:

Absolutley, but please pick up a permission slip first.  Even if you are just curious, a parent still needs to approve.

  • Do I need to go out and buy a telescope?

    Posted by:

No, there is no special equipment needed for this club.  It is true that a good pair of sky binoculars set on a tripod will allow you to see beyond that of the naked eye.  A telescope (depending on magnification) will see a great deal more.  However, everything that we will observe will be easily visible to anyone standing under a dark AZ sky.

  • If Astronomy Club is at 3pm, how will we see any stars??

    Posted by:

This is a club where we will plan observations that we will do on our own...at night.  We will take walks outside and map the sky in order to plan observations of constellations, asterisms, planets, moon phases, and more.
