    Welcome!

    Welcome to First Grade! My name is Mrs. Hermsen and I am thrilled to be working with you and your child at WGA. I am a native of Illinois, but have lived in Arizona since 2000. I am married and have two sons attending schools in CUSD. Being a fulltime teacher and a mom of boys keeps me racing throughout the school year, and I love it.

    My Education and Professional Background

    Teaching is a chosen second career for me. Before teaching, I earned a Bachelor of Arts in Communications, Media Studies with a specialization in Fine Arts from the University of Iowa, and then worked in television news. While working, I earned a Master of Arts in Elementary Education. I began teaching in 2003. I have been fortunate enough to teach Kindergarten - 6th Grade. My years in the classroom have been spent teaching general education in 3rd Grade - 6th Grade and English Language Development for English Language Learners in 1st Grade & 2nd Grade. Since 2017 I have been teaching in Gifted Education and I am thrilled to be at Weinberg Gifted Academy. 

    My Educational Philosophy

    I believe in providing my students with the opportunity to question everything, take chances, make mistakes, and grow in an environment that is safe, inclusive, and respectful. Utilizing creativity and connections, I aspire to encourage all children to become innovative thinkers, makers, and to reach their full potential.
