Hamilton High School: Weight Training Syllabus
Instructor: Coach Hartwig
Physical education is an important part of a student’s experience at Hamilton High School. In weight training, the students will be challenged to improve all components of fitness through resistance training, stretching, and cardiovascular activities. Students will learn how to perform many exercises and will be expected to work every day to achieve their fitness goal.
Hamilton Appropriate Use of Technology
The Governing Board intends that technological resources provided by the district be used in a safe responsible and proper manner in support of the instructional program and for the advancement of student learning. It is the policy of the Chandler Unified School District to maintain an environment that promotes, ethical and responsible conduct in all electronic resource activities by staff and students. The District reserves the right to monitor use of the District’s systems for improper use without warning or prior consent. Students shall be informed that computer files and electronic communications, including email, are not private and may be accessed by the District at any time. Inappropriate use may result in disciplinary action and/or legal action in accordance with the law and Board policy. Please visit the student handbook at https://www.cusd80.com/handbooks for further details about appropriate use of technology.
Hamilton Virtual Attendance Statement
Attendance is based on engagement. If a student is not present for synchronous instruction and does not complete the asynchronous/alternative assignment for the daily class meeting, then the student is considered absent. Teachers will contact attendance clerks once a student is determined to be absent.
Please read through the syllabus. Initial every blank (parent/guardian & student) and sign at the bottom of the back page.

______ ______ Students are required to wear the Hamilton High Physical Education uniform to class. This consists of a gray shirt, maroon/black shorts or pants, socks, and athletic shoes. Shoes must be tied. Clothing must follow the school dress code. STUDENTS ARE REQUIRED TO PARTICIPATE IN CLASS EVERY DAY to earn participation points. Not wearing the proper uniform will result in a loss of points. P.E. clothes need to be laundered at least once a week.
______ ______ Students will lose points if they are not dressed in their P.E. uniform. Points will be deducted for wearing part of the uniform. Students who are tardy to the locker room at the beginning of the period, or the weight room for roll call will lose points for that day. Be on time!
______ ______ Each student is assigned a lock and locker by their teacher. Students are to use their small lockers to store their P.E. uniform. Big lockers are to be used during class only to store student belongings. Locks and belongings left in big lockers after class will be removed. Do not share lockers. Do not share your combination with anyone. Do not switch small lockers. Replacement locks are $5. Students will not be allowed to use their own lock or any other locker room. HAMILTON HIGH IS NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR LOST OR STOLEN ITEMS.
______ ______ NO PHONES IN CLASS. DO NOT USE YOUR PHONE IN THE LOCKER ROOM. Cell phones and electronic devices are a distraction in weight training. Students will not be allowed to use their cell phones or other electronic devices during class (in the locker room, weight room, gym, or on the track). Hamilton High and its staff are not responsible for lost or stolen electronic devices. Do not have your phone with you during class. It may be confiscated or you may lose points if your phone is with you during class.
______ ______ Students are required to participate in class every day. If a student is unable to participate, that student needs to provide the teacher with a written excuse that has a date, phone number, and parent/guardian signature. These students will still be required to dress out and help the teacher or complete an alternate assignment. A note from a doctor will need to be provided if a student is unable to participate for more than three days.
______ ______ Inappropriate behavior will not be tolerated. No profanity in class or the locker room. This is a weight training class and not recess. Students who choose to misbehave will lose points, their parents may be contacted, and the student may be referred to their assigned administrator.
______ ______ Students should use the restroom before or after class. Students should not leave class to use the restroom. Students have time in the locker room to change their clothes before and after class and students should use the bathroom during this time.
______ ______ Semester grades will be based on quarter grades and the semester exam. Each quarter is worth 40% and the semester exam is worth 20%. Participation points are based on being present, wearing P.E. uniform, displaying proper attitude at all times, and appropriate participation. The bulk of points will be earned through participation, but other assignments throughout the semester will also contribute to a student’s grade. Students can make up points for excused absences, but will not be able to make-up points for unexcused absences. Make-ups must be completed within one week of absence. Attendance is required. “A.R.S. §15-803 (B) states that absences may be considered excessive when the number of absent days exceeds ten percent of the number of required attendance days prescribed in A.R.S. §15-802. Ten percent equates to nine (9) days of absences per semester regardless of whether they are excused or unexcused. Students with excessive excused absences will be required to provide medical documentation to remain in class and excuse any further absences. If additional absences occur, and medical documentation is not provided, the student will be referred to administration.”
______ ______ Participation points are typically earned on a weekly basis. Here is an example of how a student will earn participation points in a week where 50 points are possible:
50 points- A student earning 50 points is present, on time, and in their uniform every day. The student follows directions, is always on task, and is obviously working to improve their strength or fitness level. This student’s participation would be described as excellent.
40-49 points- A student earning 40-49 points is present, on time, and in their uniform most of the time. This student may have been absent, not in the right clothes, or off task during the week which resulted in a loss of points. This student’s participation would be described as above average to good.
30-39 points- A student earning 30-39 points may have been absent, not in uniform, disruptive, or displaying poor effort throughout the week. This student’s behavior would be described as below average to average.
10-29 points- A student earning 10-29 points has not earned enough points to get a passing grade for the week. This student is making decisions that show that success in weight training is not a priority (being absent, not in uniform, behavior problem, disruptive choices, cheating, lack of effort, defiant). This student’s participation would be described as poor, and they would earn a failing participation grade for the week.
0 points- A student earning zero points may have been absent the whole week, present but not in uniform, cheating on assignments, and other things listed in the 10-29 point category that caused this individual to lose points. This student’s participation would be described as unacceptable.
______ ______ The only drink allowed in class is WATER. No other food, drink, or sports beverage is permitted in the locker room, gym, or fitness center. Students are encouraged to bring their own water bottle to class every day.
