Senior Year
Posted by Savannah Menger on 7/17/2023 1:00:00 PMSenior year is such a wonderful time for students. It is the end of their educational experience before entering into adulthood. With that in mind, students have an opportunity to create some wonderful memories in this final year of adventure here in their English class.
The Journey of Discovery-
Quarter one will bring the journey of discovering how they define themselves. We will dive into who they are with personal narratives, a unit on life skills, and help with their first essay for college provided by the common application essay used by the vast majority of colleges. Now, whether the student plans to attend college, enter the workforce, go to technical school, or enlist in the military, who they are matters. Helping them discover themselves will be a great first step into what their future holds.
Quarter two brings the discovery of how the world impacts them. Students will look at graphic novels, social media posts, and explore what is happening in the world around them. They will write an argumentative paper towards the end of the quarter to persuade others to see the world the way they do.
Quarter 3 begins the journey of how they can change the world. The primary focus this quarter will be a problem solution essay where they will identify a problem they see in the world and explore ways to actually solve that problem. They will explore informational text on different problems happening in the world as well as investigate the people at the forefront of change.
Quarter four brings us to the journey of how they will live a happy life. Students will read The Blue Zones and create a senior project around three changes they want to implement in their day-to-day lives. From reducing screen time to incorporating hiking into their lives, they will get the opportunity to evaluate what a happy life looks like.
It is going to be a great year and I look forward to embarking on this journey with you all!
