Aerospace Science (AS) 100/200/300 Courses are taught on a rotating basis year-to-year to all grade levels. Each class perios will have a mix of cadets from all grade levels. AS 450 is for juniors/seniors who are ready for a rigorous, honors-level aviation class. AS 400 is only for cadet staff members who are seniors.
AS 100 - Milestones in Aviation History Full Year; 1 Credit;
Grades 9-12 This is an aviation history course focusing on the development of flight throughout the centuries. It starts with ancient civilizations, then progresses through time to modern day. The emphasis is on civilian and military contributions to aviation; the development, modernization, and transformation of the Air Force; and military applications of airpower from World War I to the present. It is interspersed with concise overviews of the principles of flight to include basic aeronautics, aircraft motion and control, flight power, and rockets. Throughout the course, there are readings, videos, hands-on activities, computer simulator flying and in-text and student workbook exercises to guide in the reinforcement of the materials. Cadets also complete LE 100 as part of the class.
AS 200 - Science of Flight Full Year; 1 Credit
Grades 9-12 During this year cadets will look deeper into the flying environment. Major sections of study are basic aerodynamics and propulsion, weather, aerospace physiology and air navigation. In additions to reading, workbook exercises and informal lecture, hands-on activities, videos and flight simulation software are used to enhance understanding. When able, a field trip to an operational military flying unit to observe actual applications of each section is planned for the second semester. Cadets also complete LE 200.
AS 300 - Exploring Space Full Year; 1 Credit
Grades 9-12 Moving beyond the Earth's atmosphere, cadets are introduced to the physics of space travel and investigate the mechanics and environment of space. Basic concepts of astronomy is introduced, and cadets learn how space missions are developed and integrated. In addition to learning the history of space exploration, they will explore various future options being planned and envisioned. Readings, in-text and workbook exercises are enhanced with a major group project that also prepares cadets for future leadership positions within the corps and beyond. Cadets also complete LE 300. AS 400 - Management of the Cadet Corps (Aerospace Science 400 in catalog) Full Year; 1 Credit;
Grade 12 only Cadets will develop group management skills as the primary leadership of the entire cadet corps. Cadets also complete LE 400 and its emphasis on leadership styles. AS 450 - Aviation Ground School Full Year; 1 Credit;
Grades 11-12 only Instructor Approval Req'd
This course prepares students to take the Federal Aviation Administration Private Pilot Knowledge (written) examination. Cadets' studies include aerodynamics, airplane systems, airports, airspace, communications, Federal Air Regulations, navigation, airplane performance, flight planning and flight physiology. Course is taught by an FAA certified ground instructor in a collegiate style. Cadets also complete elements of LE 300. AS 500 - Competitive Drill Team Full Year; 1 Credit;
Grades 9-12 Concurrent Enrollment In Second AS Class Req'd
Students are introduced to the principles of teamwork, building confidence and strengthening self-esteem. Drill instills a sense of discipline and enthusiasm resulting in a higher degree of self-reliance and self-discipline. Cadets learn both unarmed and armed regulation and exhibition drill routines. Competitions require attendance on most Saturday mornings in January and February, as well as some other Saturday's. The team members may participate in at least one out-of-state regional/national competition. LE 100 - Traditions, Wellness, and Foundations of Citizenship Taught concurrently with AS 100 LE-100 introduces cadets to the Air Force Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (AFJROTC) program providing a basis for progression through the rest of the AFJROTC program while instilling elements of good citizenship. It contains sections on cadet and Air Force organizational structure; uniform wear; customs, courtesies, and other military traditions; health and wellness; fitness; individual self-control; and citizenship. The AFJROTC Health & Wellness Program will be implemented during this portion of the class. LE 200 - Communication, Awareness and Leadership Taught concurrently with AS 200 Leadership Education 200 hours stress communications skills and cadet corps activities. Much information is provided on communicating effectively, understanding groups and teams, preparing for leadership, solving conflicts and problems, and personal development. Written reports and speeches compliment the academic materials. Cadet corps activities include holding positions of greater responsibility in the planning and execution of corps projects. The AFJROTC Health & Wellness Program will be implemented during this portion of the class. LE 300 - Life Skills and Career Opportunities Taught concurrently with AS 300 This course focuses on providing life skills cadets will need upon graduation. Career and educational opportunities post-high school are explored while concurrently learning concepts for building wealth and developing a sound financial plan. Cadets also learn about the college application process to include mock interviews and essays. LE 200 skills are reinforced as cadets also practice the job search process with emphasis on written and oral communication.
LE 400 - Fundamentals of Management Taught concurrently with AS 400 Leadership Education 400 is a guide to understanding the fundamentals of management, managing oneself, and others. The AFJROTC Health & Wellness Program will be implemented during this portion of the class.
