Class Objective
It is the goal of every mathematics class at Basha High School for the students to master the material in the subject at a level which will give them the greatest possible chance to meet and exceed the state and district standards. It is also a goal that students can use this material in order to become a proficient problem solver, which is another state and district standard.
I. Attendance
Show up to class ON TIME. Basha High School’s policy on tardies will be followed. You are tardy when you are not in your seat, with books and supplies ready to go, when the bell finishes ringing. Tardies #1 thru #3 students will be verbally warned, on tardy #4 and for every tardy after that, a referral will be written. Also, this year conference period will be on Wednesday and Thursday from 9:19 - 9:44. During this time students are only allowed out of the classroom if they have a pass from the teacher or club they are seeing or attending. The library is not available during conference. Students should use this time to study, read or continue with their school work.
II. Absences /Make –Up Work.
Basha High School’s policy on absences and make up work will be followed, only late work for an excused absence will be accepted. Unexcused absence assignments will count as a zero. How many days of excused absences will determine how many days will be awarded to make up missing assignments. If you are absent, it is YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to get the make-up work and turn it in based on the number of excused absences.
STUDENTS MAY BE DROPPEDAFTER THEIR 10TH ABSENCE.
III. Classroom Conduct
1. Common courtesy is the law of the land. Please show respect for yourself and family, your classmates, school property, and for me.
2. Refrain for using foul, vulgar and profane language.
3. No food or drinks, except water, are allowed in the classroom.
4. Sometimes your actions will require you to be disciplined. A general consequence guideline I will follow, but not limited to, will be: On your 1stincident we will meet /discuss your behavior, on your 2nd incident, parent contact will be made and on the 3rd incident a discipline referral will be written.
5. Technology: Although school policy allows technology, students will be expected not to have anything out during lectures. If it becomes a distraction, I will hang on to it until the end of class and if it creates a bigger distraction, then it will be turned into the front office for parent to pick up.
IV. Grading. “There will not be a 50% rule this year for large assignments, quizzes and tests!”
Grading will be on a standard scale based on the number of points available per quarter.
A = 100% - 90% B = 89%- 80% C = 79% - 70% D = 69% - 60% F = 59% - 0%
V. Semester Grade Calculation.
Semester Grade = (1st Nine Weeks)(40%) + (2ndNine Weeks)(40%) + (Semester Exam)(20%)
VI. Class/Homework.
Class/homework is important because it is a valuable aid in helping you make the most of your experience in school. Class/homework will be given because it reinforces what has been taught in class and helps you develop self-discipline, responsibility, and organizational skills. Mathematical concepts are best learned when classroom activities are followed up with independent practice. Class/homework assignments are just that, PRACTICE. You are encouraged to ASK questions, work together, and make mistakes. It should be a learning experience as you prepare for the exam.
VII. Assignments.
Assignments will be given daily and are worth 5 points each. Assignments are to be done completely, attempting ALL problems, projects while SHOWING ALL WORK. To receive full credit on assignments, notes need to be taken and shown as assignments are handed in. No notes equals 3 out of 5 points if all problems are completed. Weekly Warm Ups will be worth 5 points each day and totaling 15-20 points at the end of each week depending on how many school days there are that week.
ALL ASSIGNMENTS ARE TO BE TURNED IN BY THE END OF THE WEEK THEY WERE HANDED OUT. ASSIGNMENTS GIVEN ON FRIDAY WILL BE DUE MONDAY. ANY ASSIGNMENTS NOT TURNED IN CANNOT BE MADE UP THE FOLLOWING WEEK OR MONDAY UNLESS THERE ARE EXCUSED ABSENCES.
VIII. Tests, Quizzes, Quarter Exam, Semester Exam.
Tests will be given at the end of each unit. Throughout each unit, quizzes will be given to check for understanding and to check to see if we are on pace. Some quizzes will be announced, some may be unannounced. Quarters exams may be used by the Chandler Unified School District and may be given at the end of each quarter. The Chandler Unified School District’s semester Benchmark (semester exam) will be given at the end of each semester.
IX. Supplies.
Paper, writing tool (a pencil works best) and at least a scientific calculator.
X. Diversity Statement
In addition to the Chandler Unified School District and Basha High School code of conduct, students are expected to adhere to the following classroom expectations. All individuals have a right to an educational environment free from bias, prejudice and bigotry. As members of the Basha High School educational community, students are expected to refrain from participating in acts of harassment that are designed to demean another student’s race, gender, ethnicity, religious preference, disability or sexual orientation. Violation of the aforementioned will result in immediate disciplinary action.
XI. Infinite Campus Availability / Access – Student Grades
Parents can access their child’s grades and assignments by going to the school’s website and clicking on Parent Connect. Students’ information is only accessible by using an individualized password assigned by the school. Parents may contact office personnel/counselor for their child’s password.
XII. Closing
Mathematics can be very fun and enjoyable and I will try my best to ensure this, but it is not just a one-way street. You must put forth the effort and desire to succeed. You can’t just sit back and wait for the A’s and B’s to roll in. I place a high value on effort and hard work and I will always take into consideration YOUR efforts when determining grades. Mathematics can be a BEAR, so please make sure that you see me if you have any problems, questions or concerns.
Don’t wait! I look forward to working with you this year.Ron Ifversen
