Course Description
This class provides students strategies that assist with executive functions in addition to opportunities to complete and receive assistance on class assignments, tests, as necessary according to the IEP’s.
Course Goals & Outcomes
The educational goals for this course are:
- Students will improve their executive function skills.
- Students will gain an understanding of their Individualized Education Program (IEP).
- Students will gain independence in self-advocacy.

Course Structure/Approach
This class provides students with the opportunity to complete work from their mainstream classes. This time is self-directed and teacher supported. Students are expected to have appropriate assignments/materials from core classes (reading, writing, math, etc) to complete while in Strategies.
Required Materials
- Pencils, pens, highlighters
- Composition notebook
- Work from mainstream/core classes (including all necessary materials)
*Failure to bring your composition book to class will result in loss of daily points.
Classroom Expectations
Students are expected to follow all school and classroom rules as stated in the classroom and student handbook.
- Food and drink are NOT allowed in classrooms.
- Profanity is NOT allowed.
The consequences for misbehavior could include:
- Verbal warning
- Conference with student and loss of daily on task points
- Phone call to parent/guardian
- Conduct referral submitted to appropriate grade level administrator
(Automatic referral given in extreme circumstances)
Cell Phone Policy
Cell phone use will not be allowed without teacher approval.
Attendance/Excessive Absences
A.R.S. §15-803 (B) states that absences may be considered excessive when the number of absent days exceeds ten percent of the number of required attendance days prescribed in A.R.S. §15-802. Ten percent equates to nine (9) days of absences per semester regardless of whether they are excused or unexcused. Students with excessive excused absences will be required to provide medical documentation to remain in class and excuse any further absences. If additional absences occur, and medical documentation is not provided, the student will be referred to administration.
Tardy Policy
The following sequence will be followed for tardy student:
- Verbal warning for first 2 tardies
- Loss of daily time on task points for 3rd tardy and each subsequent tardy
- Excessive tardies will result in a referral to HHS truancy officer or administrator.
Homework Policy
Students are responsible for making up all daily Strategies work when returning from an absence. Make-up work must be completed within the same amount of time the student was absent from class.
