Honors English 10/AP Seminar syllabus
Information about AP Seminar with African Diaspora content:
This innovative course is the first CollegeBoard AP course with African content. Students can expect to learn about the causes, effects, and implications of the African Diaspora. Content will change from year to year, but students will begin the course by examining the digital humanities research project slavevoyages.org. This past year, students researched different regions of Africa, read and analyzed themes in Things Fall Apart and The Water Dancer, and analyzed artwork such as The Redemption of Ham by Modesto Brocos. We have discussed such topics as the repatriation of African artifacts, China's infrastructure projects in Africa, and feminism in Africa. Students choose their own research topics for several projects, and students have researched: colorism in African American communities as well as Asia, redlining policies, the militarization of the police in the US, Arizona's ethnic studies program, California university system's decision to go test-blind in college admissions and its impact on students of color, and disparities in health care in communities of color (just to name a few).

We also have an established partnership with ASU. Our faculty sponsor is Dr. Lisa Aubrey. Last year, students were able to travel to ASU to receive research instruction from college librarians. Students were provided access to all of ASU's research databases, and in the 2019-2020 school year, students attended some of Dr. Aubrey's college courses. A normal school year will also include a variety of guest speakers.
