Course Description
ART110 Ceramics 1 (One Semester, 1⁄2 Credit - Fee may be required): Students will explore the nature of clay and glazes, hand forming methods, throwing on the potter’s wheel, decorative processes, and glaze applications.
Advanced Placement (AP) / International Baccalaureate (IB) / Dual Enrollment

Course Fees
Students are required to pay a lab free of $30 for the course. This fee provides materials such as clay, glazes, paints, tools, and other art supplies that are necessary for students to have a productive and enjoyable ceramics class. The fee must be paid within the first two weeks to the bookstore to avoid being listed as a fine.

Course Access
This course is taught in person at Hamilton High School. Students will have access to the curriculum and instruction in the classroom. Google Classroom is the primary location for students to access material when absent from classes taught in person. Buzz is the primary location for COA students to access materials at all times.

Students are expected to come to class on time, prepared, and ready to learn each day. Success in this course is directly related to daily attendance.
Use common sense and courtesy with cellphones. Students should not be on cell phones texting, making/taking phone calls at any time, or be on cell phones during class. Be advised that clay and clay dust are damaging to cell phones. Cell phones may crack if they fall on the

concrete floor. If students misuse cell phones or fail to follow directions with phones, they will be confiscated by security and need to be picked up in the front office.
Late work
Missing projects or assignments will be entered as a missing/zero in Infinite Campus Students are allowed to make up major projects for that quarter only

Students will complete assessments during each unit of study to assess their understanding. Students will complete a final at the end of the first and second semesters. The final will count for 20% of the student's final semester grade in grades 9-12 and 10% in grades 7-8 (some exceptions may apply at the Junior High level).
Final exams will be given during the CUSD Jr High/High School Early Dismissal days in December and May, as identified on the District Calendar.
If students are requested to participate in a survey, the survey questions will be provided to parents/guardians seven days before student contact.

Quarter grades
Students will be evaluated by their participation, written examinations/evaluations, objectives, completion of projects and class work throughout the year.
Projects will be graded and entered into the gradebook four times: Sketches, Greenware, Glazeware & Completion. Here is the breakdown of each step in the process:Sketches: Sketches will be based off of completion, effort and creativity of ideas. Sketches will usually require brainstorming sketches and then five sketches of the final design from the following viewpoints: front, back, right side, left side & top.
Greenware: The first step in the Process of Clay, once a project has been constructed and is ready to dry out for its first firing in the kiln. This stage will be graded using the following: requirements met, craftsmanship, effort/perseverance and clean-up.
Glazeware: At the third step in the Process of Clay, once a project has been bisque fired, a layer of glaze will be applied to the artwork. This grade will be graded on completion/requirements, creativity and clean-up.
Completion: Once a project has been completed in its entirety, a grade will be given based on the use of elements of art & principles of design, activation of physical space, creativity & originality, effort & perseverance, craftsmanship & skill and technical competence, clean-up and

skill with materials.
Quizzes will be given periodically throughout the semester in testing skills, techniques, vocabulary and other objectives taught in the course. Some will be pass/fail; others will be graded on the point system.
Critiques will be conducted throughout the year. These critiques will range from a class discussion, individual self-reflection, peer critiques, art walks and many other formats.
Daily Performance:
Weekly Performance Points: Each day a student will earn ten points performance points by completing the Content Question. The content question is also used for attendance. You have 48 hours to complete this, no exceptions. Once we begin in person instruction points will also be given for class participation. If a student is not working on the assignment(s) given, it is up to the teacher’s discretion how many points will be deducted.
Classroom Assignments might include a worksheet, essay, handout, sketches or cleaning assignment for that day.
Final: (20%) Written/Multiple Choice Final Exam, Semester Final Project
Multiple Choice Final: A multiple choice and/or essay exam will be given at the end of each semester to evaluate the progress of each student.
Final Project: A final project will be created to complete this grade at the end of the semester.
Semester grades
The following formula is used to calculate semester grades
● 40/40/20: Each quarter accounts for 40% of the semester grade and the final examaccounts for the remaining 20%.
