    Ø  What is special education?

    §  Special education means specially designing instruction to meet the unique needs of a student with a disability. Services are made available to meet the needs of all students with disabilities within the responsibility of the district who have been determined eligible and need special education and related services in order to benefit from their educational program.

     
    Ø  Students with disabilities are those children evaluated as having:

    §  Autism (AUT)

    §  Emotional Disability (ED)

    §  Hearing Impairment (HI)

    §  Other Health Impairments (OHI)

    §  Specific Learning Disability (SLD)

    §  Mild/Moderate Mental Retardation (MIMR/MOMR)

    §  Severe Mental Retardation (SMR)

    §  Multiple Disabilities (MD)

    §  Multiple Disabilities with Severe Sensory Impairment (MDSSI)

    §  Orthopedic Impairment (OI)

    §  Preschool Moderate Delay (PMD)

    Ø  Can my student take honors or AP courses?

    §  Yes, students may enroll in honors and AP courses
     

    Ø  Can my student fail a class and, if so, what happens?

    §  Yes, any student can fail a class.

    §  The student must repeat the course during summer school or in a classroom setting during the school year.

     

    Ø  Our family is leaving Basha, what should I do?

    §  Contact your student’s service coordinator or call the IEP services office at 480-224-2276.

    §  Consider requesting a copy of the MET and IEP for personal records.

     

    Ø  What are the expectations of a student with special needs?

    §  Advocate for their needs within the classroom

    §  Attend their meetings

    §  Discuss post-secondary goals with our transition specialist

    §  Earn course credits given the accommodations and modifications listed in the IEP

    §  Meet with service coordinators to discuss IEP services and needs
     

    Ø  What times will meetings related to IEP services take place?

    §  Meetings take place before school Tuesday through Friday at 7AM or immediately following the last bell at 2:30PM Monday through Thursday.

    §  Enter the main office and check in with our front desk secretary who will alert team members of your arrival.

    (Currently meetings are not being held in person.  All meetings will be held virtually by video or phone until further notice)

     

    Ø  What tutoring option exists for students?

    §  Every teacher offers weekly tutoring. Check on their webpages or email directly for specifics.

    §  NHS offers student-to-student tutoring.Please see Counselor for Dates and Times.
    §  Parents and students are responsible for coordinating tutoring times with teachers
     

    Ø  When will I meet my child’s service coordinator?

    §  Service coordinators generally send out correspondence at the start of the year.

    §  Many parents meet service coordinators at Basha’s July parent’s night.

    §  Sometimes, face-to-face interactions first take place at the annual review.
     

    Ø  When will I receive my child’s schedule?

    §  Students receive schedules during Bear Down days.
