    Welcome!

    Welcome to Creative Writing and Film Studies I & II! In these courses, students will engage with diverse texts, authors, films, and creators to expand both their literary and worldly foundations. Together, we will develop our critical and analytical reading abilities and learn to be better students, writers, and human beings.

    My Education and Professional Background

    I earned my terminal Master's of Fine Arts in Creative Writing from Northern Arizona University, along with a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature and Prose and a Bachelor of Science in Women's and Gender Studies.  I have certifications in secondary and post-secondary education, and am a qualified Subject Matter Expert; I also received my CILS 4 Certification in Italian Language and Literature from l'Università degli Studi di Siena.

    Most recently, I was awarded an honorary Doctorate in Post-Colonial and Contemporary Literature from the University of Arizona for my graduate coursework in Flagstaff and Tucson.

    I am a published author, both in-print and online, and my work includes poetry, short fiction, and scientific and academic research.  Prior to teaching at Casteel High School, I taught courses in rhetoric and composition, interdisciplinary writing, creative non-fiction, poetry, fiction, and Italian at Northern Arizona University.

    I teach Creative Writing and Film Studies part-time at Casteel, and Poetry and First-Year English part-time at the University of Arizona.

    My Educational Philosophy

    One of my primary goals as an educator is to facilitate a safe learning environment for every student in my classroom—for this reason, civility and inclusiveness of speech will be observed at all times. I also believe in cultivating a space for students to grow and make mistakes; academia can be a difficult and often unforgiving field, so I work to equip my students with the necessary skills and qualities to overcome hardships, meet challenges head-on, and to be the best version of themselves in and beyond the classroom.
