What is the National Honor Society for Dance Arts (NHSDA)?
NHSDA is a program of the National Dance Education Organization (NDEO) whose mission is to "recognize outstanding artistic merit, leadership, and academic achievement in students studying dance and to foster an appreciation for dance as a true art form and one worthy of recognition and prestige."
Similar to the PHS Dance Department, the NHSDA emphasizes community, kindness, and artistry. Students will identify and work towards their personal and professional goals. By participating in NHSDA, students will have a chance to be a part of projects, events, and other opportunities in addition to their traditional classes and performances that will help them achieve these goals.
Why join NHSDA?
Joining NHSDA is a great opportunity for dance students to further their education. Students in NHSDA will receive the benefits of:
*Recognition for artistic merit, academic achievement, and leadership.
*Certificates, pins, and cords for achieving the milestone of induction and graduation with honors.
*Mentorship from the chapter and networking with peers.
*Leadership and development opportunities, such as assisting with chapter administration, record keeping, fundraising, and event planning.
What is needed to join?
As a dance honors society which focuses on both artistic and academic achievement, students will need to meet the Honors GPA requirement of at least 3.25.
Students will work throughout their high school career to earn points and volunteer hours in order to qualify for induction into the National Dance Honors Society. Students earn points through participation in dance classes, rehearsals, performances, leadership roles, workshops or festivals, and by participating in other dance-related events at PHS. There are also opportunities for students to earn points through school and extracurricular activities. Volunteer hours are earned within the PHS dance department and will include a variety of tasks to help grow, foster and maintain our amazing program.
Induction into NHSDA is earned through the accumulation of 30 points which are awarded for meritorious work in dance and meets the honor society's general guidelines. At least 20 points must be earned through participation in site-based, dance program activities. NHSDA members will also need to meet the required 40 hours of volunteer work. Ideally, students should aim to accrue at least 10 volunteer hours a year.
How do I become involved in NHSDA?
Criteria for NHSDA membership include the following:
*Members must be a current PHS 9th-12th grade student.
*Members must be enrolled in dance at PHS for 3 or more years.
*Members will need to attend NHSDA meetings and join the NHSDA Google Classroom
*Members will need to maintain a 3.25 grade point average (cumulative).
