Mrs. Mac's niece, Reylynn Grace Irvine, was a healthy and happy eight month old baby. On Monday, January 30th,2017 she became ill with a stomach flu. The doctor told her parents to take her home and give her fluids and Tylenol. By the next morning, she was lethargic and unresponsive. She coded within an hour of arriving in the ER, and was revived twice until the third time her heart stopped and was pronounced dead at 7:03 p.m., January 31st, 2017. The doctors determined that she had contacted meningitis. As expected, the family was filled with grief and Mrs. Mac did not know what to do to help her brother and sister-in-law. No words could heal them. Parents should never have to bury their children.

But what could we do to help? Mrs. Mac came up with the idea that if we could save one family from the loss that they suffered, it would be worth it. Since it is January and the height of cold and flu season, our goal is to collect Kleenex, hand sanitizer, soap and disinfecting wipes to curb the spread of germs in the classroom. Every classroom at Casteel will be equipped with Kleenex, hand sanitizer and wipes and soap will be placed in every science lab and art sink. We know we cannot stop the flu, but we can avoid spreading the germs as much as possible. Although most of us have strong immune systems, many people have compromised immune systems; especially the very young or elderly in our population.

We will donate the supplies, to our classrooms, our community churches and the classrooms at Highland Junior High School.

The Care drive lasts from January 13th until January 31st. Please bring donations to your fourth hour. The class who collects the most donations will win a pizza party!
